    • PURPOSE: A yarn of pitch fibers is mixed with yarns of organic polymer fibers or inorganic fibers into another yarn, then it is subjected to preoxidation and carbonization to produce low-cost carbon fibers of high mechanical strength with good handleability.
CONSTITUTION: Pitch fibers such as made from coal tar, are combined with organic polymer fibers which do not melt under preoxidation and carbonization conditions such as cotton, polyvinyl chloride or silk yarn or inorganic fibers such as carbon or metallic fibers into a yarn, then the yarn is subjected to preoxidation and graphitization to produce the objective carbon fibers.

    • PURPOSE: After pitch is melt-extruded into a yarn is allowed to fall down on a bar which advances straight, as it reciprocates in the direction perpendicular to the bar axis at a constant speed so that the yarn is hung into a curtain, then the screen is subjected to preoxidation and carbonization to give the titled filaments with high uniformity and strength, in high efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: Pitch is melt-extruded through the nozzle 1 into fibers 2 and the fibers are passed on the roll 4 through the air sucker 5 so that the yarn is treated with a yarn-collecting agent 6. The yarn 3 is collected, then allowed to fall down on the bar 8 which advances straight or reciprocates in its axis direction, while reciprocating at a certain speed in the direction perpendicular to its axis. The resultant yarn curtain 3 on the bar 8, as it is, or after the curtain is transferred to another bar 10, as its form is kept, is passed through preoxidizer and carbonizer to produce the objective continuous filaments of pitch carbon fibers.

    • PURPOSE: To collect cotton-like relatively short fibers obtained by centrifugal spinning, in high efficiency, by manufacturing a fiber group by centrifugal spinning, and taking the group out of the system in the form of a tow wherein the constituent fibers are arranged almost parallel to the length of the tow.
CONSTITUTION: The fibers spun by the perforated cup 1 are collected by the air- permeable lattice wall 6 attached to the outside of the end of the path 5 between the guide plates 3, 4. The transfer air stream is blasted from the port 2 horizontally outward, and the fibers collected by the wall 6 are dropped, cut with the cutter 7, accumulated on the rotary plate 9, guided by the guide plate 10 to the discharge port 11, and taken out of the system continuously in the form of two.

    • PURPOSE: To prevent the troubles in the handling of solidified pitch, by dividing the thermal polymerization process of pitch in two stages, heat-treating the pitch in the first thermal polymerization step until the pitch is about to form the mesophase, storing the product in liquid state, and supplying the liquid to a spinning apparatus furnished with a vacuum thermal polymerization apparatus.
CONSTITUTION: Pitch is made to react with a hydrogen-donative solvent, alcohol, phenol, etc., and the solvent is removed from the reaction product. The processed pitch is subjected to the thermal polymerization at 400W500°C to the state immediately before the formation of meso-phase, and is stored in liquid phase. The stored liquid pitch is supplied to a spinning apparatus furnished with a vacuum thermal polymerization apparatus, heated quickly to 400W550°C under reduced pressure to develop the meso-phase, and is spun as it is to obtain the objective pitch fiber.
