    • PURPOSE: To prevent the troubles in the handling of solidified pitch, by dividing the thermal polymerization process of pitch in two stages, heat-treating the pitch in the first thermal polymerization step until the pitch is about to form the mesophase, storing the product in liquid state, and supplying the liquid to a spinning apparatus furnished with a vacuum thermal polymerization apparatus.
      CONSTITUTION: Pitch is made to react with a hydrogen-donative solvent, alcohol, phenol, etc., and the solvent is removed from the reaction product. The processed pitch is subjected to the thermal polymerization at 400W500°C to the state immediately before the formation of meso-phase, and is stored in liquid phase. The stored liquid pitch is supplied to a spinning apparatus furnished with a vacuum thermal polymerization apparatus, heated quickly to 400W550°C under reduced pressure to develop the meso-phase, and is spun as it is to obtain the objective pitch fiber.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain the titled continuous fiber consisting of a large number of single fibers, by winding pitch obtained by melt spinning round a taking up tube, making a spiral break on this pitch fiber layer along the taking up tube, making it infusible, carbonizing or graphitizing it.
      CONSTITUTION: Raw material pitch is extruded from the nozzle holes 2 of the spinning nozzle plate 1 or blown horizontally and dropped so that they are subjected to melt spinning, to give the pitch filaments 3. The pitch filaments 3 are bundled to give the fiber bundle 4, and wound round the rotating cylindrical taking up tubes 6 to form the pitch fiber layers 5. After the winding is over, spiral breaks with a given width are made on the pitc fiber layers 5 along the taking up tubes 6, to give the long continuous pitch fiber belts 7. The pitch fiber belts 7 are then passed through the infusibilizing process 8, and the carbonization process 9 or graphitizing process, so that it is made infusible, and carbonized or graphitized, to give the desired tow-shaped carbon fiber 10.

    • PURPOSE: Heavy asphalt is hydrogenated, then subjected to continuous 2-step heat treatment to enable continuous production of meso-phase pitch for making carbon fibers of high strength and elasticity.
      CONSTITUTION: In the first step, the content of the insolubles in toluene is adjusted to 10W15% in the hydrogenated heavy asphalt and the product is heat-treated under normal or elevated pressure so that the formation of insolubles in quninoline is less than 2%, while meso phase is scarcely formed. Then, in the second step, heat treatment is effected at the same or higher than the temperature in the first step under less than 30Torr pressure in a short time so that insolubles in toluene becomes 60W100%, the meso phase with a softening point of 250W360°C according to the ring-ball method forms a continuous phase. The first step treatment is carried out, preferably in a pipe-type reactor at 430W500°C for 20W90min at a flow rate of more than 1cm/sec, while the second treatment, preferably in a thin-film evaporator at 430W550°C within 5min.
