    • A variable valve timing and lift mechanism includes an actuator that adjusts the period in which an intake valve is held open by moving a drive element. When a control unit switches the duration, the control unit controls the actuator so that the duration is changed at a first speed when the duration is equal to a first value, and at a second speed when the duration is equal to a second value that is smaller than the first value. The absolute value of the second speed is smaller than the absolute value of the first speed. In effect, the actuator is controlled so that when the duration is in a short-duration range, the duration changes more slowly than when the duration is in a long-duration range.

    • An anti-locking control system for use in a motor vehicle having four wheels, comprising a hydraulic pressure supply system for applying a braking pressure from a master cylinder to two pairs of wheel-braking cylinders for braking the pair of wheels and a pump provided in common for the two pairs of cylinders in the hydraulic pressure supply system to decrease both the braking hydraulic pressures in each pair of wheel-braking cylinders. The hydraulic pressure supply system includes a pair of control valves each of which is arranged to have a first position at which the master cylinder is communicated with each of the pair of wheel-braking cylinders and a suction side of the pump is disconnected to the wheel-braking cylinder and a second position for disconnection to the wheel-braking cylinder and communication with the cylinder. Also provided in the control system an electronic control unit for effecting duty control of the pair of control valves so that the time periods at which the pair of control valves are at the second positions are not overlapped with each other. With this arrangement, although the pressure-decreasing is effected by one pump provided in common for the respective wheel-braking cylinders, it is possible to adequately effect the pressure-decreasing with respect to the lower-pressure side wheel-braking cylinder.

    • An anti-skid control system for use in a motor vehicle which controls a braking pressure for a wheel of the motor vehicle to keep a slip of the wheel to an appropriate state by alternately performing a pressure-increasing operation and a pressure-maintaining operation in accordance with a slipping state of the wheel. The system first detects a slipping state of the wheel before performing the pressure-increasing operation on the basis of a vehicle speed and a wheel speed and then detects a slipping state of the wheel when a predetermined time period is elapsed from the pressure-increasing operation in a state that the braking pressure is maintained after the completion of the pressure-increasing operation so as to calculate a variation of the slipping state of the wheel on the basis of the detection results. Further, the system adjusts the ratio of a time period for the pressure-increasing operation to a time period for the pressure-maintaining operation so that the ratio becomes smaller as the variation of the slipping state becomes greater. This arrangement allows the wheel slipping state to be accurately detected without including errors due to the braking pressure increasing operation, thereby quickly increasing the braking pressure to an appropriate value.
