    • Various embodiments are disclosed relating to the optimization of relay station handovers and location update in a wireless network (108). According to an example embodiment, a request to handover a plurality of mobile stations (112, 114) from a first base station (104) to a second base station (106) may be sent. An identifier associated with the second base station (106) for each of the plurality of mobile stations (112, 114) may be received. In another example embodiment, each of the identifiers is forwarded to the mobile station (112, 114) corresponding to the connection identifier. In another example embodiment, a location update may be performed by sending a message to a network device, such as a target base station (104), to provide location update information for a plurality of mobile stations (112, 114). In this manner, one message may be transmitted over a wireless link to facilitate a handover or location update for a plurality of mobile stations (112, 114).

    • System throughput is improved by decreasing the system overhead by reducing the size of control packets and data packet headers. A connection identifier (CID) is divided into a CID part 1 carried on a MAP IE and a CID part 2 carried on the generic MAC-PDU headers of one or more MAC PDUs. Versions of RCID-IE() in MAP messages may used to represent CID parti. The generic MAX PDU headers (GMH) may vary according to the length of CID part 1, and multiple GMHs in a PHY burst may have different CID parts 2. In addition, the type header field of the GMH may be shortened or removed. Alternatively, a modified GMH may have an extended type sub-header field. In addition, the GMH may use a shorter connection index or a connection index mask instead of a CID.
