    • A method of recovering ethylene sulfide by continuously distilling a feedstock solution containing ethylene sulfide, toluene (a hydrophobic organic compound) having a boiling point higher than that of ethylene sulfide, a compound having a boiling point higher than that of toluene, and water with the use of a continuous distilling column (2), a distilling column (4) and a rectifying column (5). Ethylene sulfide is recovered by distillating ethylene sulfide together with toluene and water out of the column (2), separating the distillate into oil and water layers in a separating tank (3), distilling continuously the oil layer in the column (4) without refluxing to distil out part of ethylene sulfide together with water, and rectifying the bottom of the column (4) in the column (5). This method makes it possible to inhibit ethylene sulfide polymerization, to separate and recover the sulfide continuously, efficiently and stably, and to evade plugging of various columns and pipings.

    • A process for preparing thiol compounds of general formula (2): HS-CH2-CHR -COOR (wherein R is H or methyl and R is H or a C1-C18 hydrocarbyl) by reacting an unsaturated compound of general formula (1): CH2=CR -COOR (wherein R and R are each as defined above) with hydrogen sulfide, wherein at least one nitrogenous compound selected from the group consisting of amide compounds each bearing an unsubstituted amode group, amide compounds each bearing an N-substituent C1-C6 hydrocarbyl, urea compounds each bearing an unsubstituted ureylene group, and urea compounds each substituted with a C1-C6 hydrocarbyl at at least either of the N- and N'-positions is present in the reaction system with a polysulfide compound of general formula (3): R OOC-CHR -CH2-Sx-CH2-CHR -COOR (wherein R is H or methyl; R is H or C1-C18 hydrocarbyl; and x is an integer of 2 to 5) and/or sulfur. According to this process, the unsaturated compound can be reacted with hydrogen sulfide speedily to give the thiol compound at a high selectivity and in a high yield.

    • A hydrous gel polymer prepared by polymerizing a monomer component containing acrylic acid (or a salt thereof) is post-neutralized so that each polymer particle derived from a polymer prepared by neutralizing the hydrous gel polymer has an acceptable degree of neutralization. The post-neutralization is conducted so that, among 200 particles of the polymer, the number of polymer particles having an unacceptable degree of neutralization outside the obove range of the acceptable degree of neutralization is 10 or less. The water-absorbent thus prepared has a high absorption ratio under ordinary or high pressure, is reduced in the water-solubles content as compared with the conventional water-absorbent, and causes no significant change in the pH of swollen gel.
