    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a high density, high strength alumina ceramic sintered compact suitable for ceramic tools, wear resistant members, or the like, and the alumina ceramic sintered compact obtained by the manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A discharge plasma sintering method is performed by: applying electric energy produced by a DC pulse generator 5 to sample powder 1 from an electrode 4 through a forming punch 3 while compressing the sample powder 1 with the forming punch 3; and sintering the sample powder 1 for a short time by heat energy from a forming die 2 heated by pulse currents flowing directly to gaps among the sample powder 1 particles and pulse currents flowing through the forming punch 3 to a forming die 2. In such a case, the powder of activated alumina having a crystallite diameter ranging from several to several tens of nanometers is used as the sample powder 1 to obtain the high density, high strong alumina ceramic sintered compact.
