    • A combustion process and apparatus for a spark ignited air compressing internal combustion engine with direct injection of the major portion of the fuel onto the wall of the combustion chamber provided in the piston in the form of a body of revolution, according to which a rotary motion is imparted upon the inflowing air in such a way that the fuel is gradually released from the combustion chamber wall and mixed with the air in the form of vapors. The injection nozzle is positioned in the cylinder head near the combustion chamber throat while the ignition device extends into the combustion chamber at the top dead center position of the piston. The fuel is injected onto the combustion chamber wall by means of a jet from which individual small fuel particles are detached which are immediately mixed with the air on being emitted from the injection nozzle opening. The small amount of combustible mixture formed by the fuel particles detached from the fuel jet and not yet conveyed by the centrifugal forces onto the wall is toward the end of the injection phase ignited close to the injection nozzle opening by the ignition device. The thus initiated combustion propagates in the direction of the revolving air across to the fuel film existing on the wall of the combustion chamber in the piston. Subsequently the main combustion takes place in conformity with the progress of the mixture of the fuel vapors generated in the wall region with the air circulating in the combustion chamber.

    • A process for operating of an internal combustion engine running on fuel that is both externally ignitible and self-ignitible, especially gasoline, the operating region of the engine including self-ignition or compression-ignition (CI) regions and external-ignition or spark-ignition (SI) regions, and a high compression ratio suitable for self-ignition of the fuel being provided, at least in compression-ignition regions, and combustion being initiated by self-ignition of the fuel-air mixture in compression-ignition regions and by spark-ignition of the fuel-air mixture in spark-ignition regions, and part-load operation being assigned to the compression-ignition region, whilst full-load operation and/or operating modes with high engine load as well as cold starts are assigned to the spark-ignition region. In order to improve the quality of the exhaust gases while maintaining high efficiency, a largely homogeneous fuel-air mixture should be produced in the combustion chamber in the compression-ignition region.

    • A spark-ignition, air-compressing, internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber in the shape of a body of revolution with a constricted opening in the piston crown. The injection nozzle is located in the cylinder head near the edge of the combustion chamber and the spark plug, opposite the injection nozzle, extends into the combustion chamber at the top dead center position of the piston. Mixture formation is predominantly by deposition of the fuel on the combustion chamber wall. In such an internal combustion engine, it is desired in applying the concept to a supercharged engine to satisfy the enhanced requirements with respect to mixture formation reliably in all ranges of operation, whereby a further improvement of ignition stability is also to be provided. This is essentially achieved by the special shape and proportioning of the combustion chamber, and in particular by the use of two arcs to form the side wall thereof, and a third arc, which joins the side wall, to form the bottom.
