    • A discrepancy between a management range of a user on a management computer, and a management range of the user in a storage, is detected with respect to a volume held in the storage. Storage management information of the management computer stores a correspondence between an identifier of a volume group, and an identifier of the user. When a plurality of volumes are designated as a managed object of the user, the management computer references the storage management information, and obtains, from the storage, an identifier of the volume group to which the plurality of designated volumes belong. Next, the management computer references the storage management information, and determines whether or not the obtained volume group is in the management range of the same user.

    • An apparatus, system, and method enable a new platform storage system to have access to an external storage system having data encrypted thereon by an existing platform storage system. Encryption information corresponding to the encrypted data in the external storage system is stored in a memory in the existing platform storage system. The encryption information stored in the memory of the existing platform storage system is transferred to an encryption table stored in the new platform storage system, so that the new platform storage system can read the encrypted data stored in the external storage system.

    • When a client access a file in a tiered storage system, the storage controller determines which tier is appropriate to store the file based on which client is accessing it and what operation is being performed. In one exemplary implementation, the tiered storage system receives a data access request corresponding to a file from the at least one client; determines the identity of the requesting client; determines an original tier of the file; determines a target tier to which the file should be migrated to; and if the original tier and the target tier are different, migrates the file from the original tier to the target tier.

    • To migrate a configuration that an old storage device has to a new storage device. A new storage device obtains a configuration of an old storage device, by using a migration manager, and prepares a logical volume definition of the new storage device based on a logical volume definition in the configuration. Also, based a cache allocation definition in the configuration and cache capacity of the new storage device, a cache allocation definition of the new storage device is prepared. Further, based on a port bandwidth allocation definition in the configuration and bandwidth capacity of a port of the new storage device, a port bandwidth allocation definition of the new storage device is prepared. The prepared logical volume definition, cache allocation definition and port bandwidth allocation definition are set up in a configuration of the new storage device.

    • A disk array has storage regions provided to store the management information for each disk volume of the backup data, and an interface is provided through which the management information for each disk volume is read from and written in by an external computer so that the backup data of disk volumes can be associated with the management information. The management information includes backup creation date and time, and content identifier, and it is set from the external computer, and updated according to the operations such as restore and tape copy based on the command from the external computer.
