A magnetic recording medium having on one surface of a nonmagnetic support a lower layer comprising an inorganic powder and a binder and an upper magnetic layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder and a binder in that order, and having on the other surface thereof a backcoat layer, wherein: said nonmagnetic support comprises inorganic powder particles with a mean primary particle diameter in a range of from 40 to 200 nm; the number of particles of said inorganic powder in the cross-section of said nonmagnetic support is in a range of from 10 to 200/100 &mgr;m2, said nonmagnetic support exhibits a coercivity in a range of from 159 to 239 kA/m; and the overall thickness is equal to or less than 8 &mgr;m. A magnetic recording medium having on one surface of a nonmagnetic support a lower layer comprising an inorganic powder and a binder and an upper magnetic layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder and a binder in that order, and having on the other surface thereof a backcoat layer, wherein: said nonmagnetic support comprises inorganic powder particles with a mean primary particle diameter in a range of from 10 to 200 nm; the number of particles of said inorganic powder in the cross-section of said nonmagnetic support is in the range of from 10 to 200/100 &mgr;m2, the amount of curl d in the direction of width of said magnetic recording medium is equal to or higher than 0.4 mm and equal to or less than 1.0 mm in the direction of protrusion of the magnetic layer at a width of 6.35 mm; and the overall thickness is equal to or less than 8 &mgr;m.

    • A magnetic recording medium prepared by a process which comprises providing a nonmagnetic layer comprising a nonmagnetic powder and a binder on a nonmagnetic support, and then providing one or more magnetic layers containing at least a ferromagnetic powder and a binder on the nonmagnetic layer while the nonmagnetic layer is wet, wherein the thickness of the magnetic layer is from 0.07 to 0.20 .mu.m, the magnetic layer comprises a resin curable by a polyisocyanate as a binder, the nonmagnetic layer is a layer cured by a polyisocyanate, and the ratio N/Fe in the magnetic layer is from 0.010 to 0.090 as determined by an X-ray photoelectric spectrophotometer; and a magnetic recording medium comprising a nonmagnetic support having thereon a lower nonmagnetic layer comprising a nonmagnetic powder and a binder, and further thereon a magnetic layer comprising at least a ferromagnetic metal powder and a binder, wherein the magnetic layer has a thickness of from 0.07 to 0.20 .mu.m, the magnetic layer has a maximum magnetic flux density Bm of from 3,700 to 6,000 G as measured in an external magnetic field of 10 kOe, the magnetic layer has a coercive force Hc of from 2,000 to 3,000 Oe, the magnetic layer has a center line surface roughness Ra of from 1.0 to 3.0 nm, and the nonmagnetic support has a center line surface roughness of from 0.5 to 7.0 nm on the side thereof to which the lower non layer is provided.

    • Provided is a particulate magnetic recording medium with good output at high frequency, yielding a low coefficient of friction, and having good running properties, in particular, a magnetic recording medium affording good electromagnetic characteristics and good repeat durability in recording and reproducing at a high-density. The magnetic recording medium comprises a lower layer comprising a nonmagnetic powder and a binder and an upper magnetic layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder, a binder and at least one abrasives provided on a nonmagnetic support in this order. The number of abrasive particles present on said magnetic layer surface satisfied the relation 0.2≦X≦1.2 (particles/&mgr;m2). When the number of pairs of abrasive particles satisfying the relation L≦2K (where K denotes the mean particle diameter of the abrasive and L denotes the distance from the center of gravity of one of the abrasive particles to the center of gravity of the other abrasive particle) is denoted as Y (particles/&mgr;m2), Y/X is equal to or less than 2.

    • A magnetic recording medium comprises a non-magnetic substrate, a lower coating layer, which is overlaid upon the non-magnetic substrate and primarily contains a binder and inorganic particles dispersed in the binder, and a magnetic layer, which is overlaid upon the lower coating layer and is constituted of at least a single layer. The magnetic layer contains at least a binder and ferromagnetic metal particles dispersed in the binder. The thickness of the magnetic layer falls within the range of 0.05 .mu.m to 0.5 .mu.m. The surface roughness of a top magnetic layer is at most 3 nm. The lower coating layer contains a fatty acid. An increase in the number of small protrusions, which have a height of at least 30 nm, does not occur substantially on the surface of the magnetic layer after the magnetic recording medium has been stored for seven days under environmental conditions of a temperature of 60.degree. C. and a relative humidity of 90%.
