    • An outdoor unit of a separate type air conditioner has suction ports and a blow-out port which can be disposed freely on the same side of the unit. Also, an outdoor unit of a one-side suction and exhaust type is excellent in static pressure characteristic, sufficient in air flow rate using only one blower, and is easy to install. Suction ports (8) are disposed at both sides in the front side of an outdoor unit main body (outer case 7), and a blow-out port (6a) is disposed in the center of the front side. A heat exchanger (3), an orifice (5), and one centripetal fan (1) are sequentially disposed behind the blow-out port (6a), thereby forming a draft circuit for sucking air from the suction ports (8) at the outer circumference of blades (1a) of the centripetal fan (1). The air is blown out ahead of the blades (1a) through the orifice (5) and heat exchanger (3). Therefore, since suction space is not required, the outdoor unit can be installed close to a wall. In addition, by the use of the centripetal fan (1), a sufficient air flow rate is obtained with only one blower, and the size of the outdoor unit for producing a same capacity may be kept to a minimum.

    • A scroll compressor comprises a generally cylindrical casing and stationary and orbiting scrolls both accommodated in the casing. The stationary and orbiting scrolls engage with each other to define a plurality of compression chambers therebetween. The orbiting scroll is driven by a drive shaft which is in turn supported by a frame having a thrust bearing formed thereon. One of an orbiting end plate of the orbiting scroll and the thrust bearing has an annular groove defined therein in which an annular seal member is received. The orbiting scroll is disposed between the stationary scroll and the frame with an axial gap defined therebetween. First, second, and third back chambers are formed on the opposite side of the compression chambers with respect to the orbiting end plate. The first and second back chambers are partitioned by the annular seal member. The second back chamber is provided radially outwardly of the first back chamber and between the orbiting end plate and the thrust bearing, while the third back chamber is provided radially outwardly of the second back chamber. Oil passages are provided to introduce lubricating oil accommodated in the casing into the first chamber in which a discharge pressure acts. The oil passages act to supply part of the lubricating oil to the second chamber and then to the third chamber while reducing the pressure of the lubricating oil until the lubricating oil is eventually introduced into the suction chamber.

    • An apparatus and method for driving a motor with a reduced current flowing in the motor, as well as reduced vibrations of the motor at a start-up is provided. The motor driving apparatus has a position detector for detecting a position of a rotor of a brushless DC motor, a DC/AC converter for converting a DC voltage derived from a DC power supply into an AC voltage, and a controller for controlling the DC/AC converter to control the conduction of a stator winding of the motor. For a start-up of the motor, the controller positions the rotor by supplying a current to a first conduction phase of the stator winding, and then once turns off the conduction. After that, the controller controls the DC/AC converter to rotate the rotor by supplying current to a second conduction phase of the stator winding, and to start a position detecting operation after a specified time elapses since the rotor starts rotation.
