    • A shift control apparatus is provided with a shift intention detecting device that electrically detects a shift intention of a driver; a shift driving device electrically controlled based on the shift intention; a shift mechanism; a first position information detecting device that detects, without contact, position information of the mechanical displacement of the shift mechanism; a shift position determining device that determines the shift position based on the position information; a second position information detecting device that detects the position information in a different way than the first position information detecting device does; a malfunction determining device that determines whether the position information detected by the first position information detecting device is erroneous; and a switching device that switches from control based on the first position information detecting device to control based on the second position information detecting device when it has been determined that the position information detected by the first position information detecting device is erroneous.

    • A motor controlling device includes an encoder to output pulse signals with a predetermined angle interval as a rotor of a motor is rotated. An energized phase of the motor is sequentially switched by detecting a rotation position of the rotor based on a value of counting the signals. An initial drive controlling portion executes an initial drive to switch the energized phase with a predetermined pattern after the device is activated so as to learn a relationship among the count value, the rotation position and the energized phase. An initial drive prohibiting portion prohibits the execution of the initial drive until a predetermined time is elapsed after the initial drive is finished.

    • A failure monitor designed to monitor a failure in operation of a motor drive control system. The system works to drive a motor-driven member through an output shaft and includes an angular position sensor for determining an angular position of the output shaft for use in controlling the motor. The failure monitor includes a storage device retaining an output shaft stop position that is the angular position of the output shaft, as determined upon a stop of the motor. The failure monitor detect the presence of failure of the angular position sensor based on a comparison between the angular position of the output shaft, as measured upon initiation of a motor start request, with the output shaft stop position.
