    • A dispenser (10) for a volatilizable material has a first member (14) that is substantially cup-shaped with a given diameter (X) and with a given depth (Z) and having a first peripheral flange (16) having a first diameter (D). A second member (18) has a second peripheral flange (20) with a second diameter (D2) greater than the given diameter (X). The first peripheral flange (16) and the second peripheral flange (20) are in intimate contact thereby defining a volatilizable material chamber (22) between the bottom (24) of the second member (18) and the bottom (26) of the first cup-shaped member (14). A volatilizable material (12) such as liquid mercury is placed in the chamber; and a hermetic seal (28) is formed between the first and second flanges. When installed in a fluorescent lamp the volatilizable material is released by heating the dispenser with RF current. The material is released when the vapor pressure within the dispenser reaches about 20 atmospheres. For mercury, this pressure is achieved when the dispenser reaches about 600° C.

    • A circuit breaker having a contact opening and closing mechanism including a contact actuator member which is moved between a first position and a second position to close and open the contacts. The movable contact is mounted on one end of an elongated contact carrier which is connected in its central region by means of a pin and slot combination (providing a free floating coupling arrangement) to the contact actuator member. A compression spring is positioned between the contact actuator member and a portion of the contact carrier between the pin and slot combination and the other end of the contact carrier. When the contact actuator member is in the first position, the compression spring produces a torque in one direction about the other end of the contact carrier forcing the contacts closed. When the contact actuator member moves from the first position toward the second, the pin and slot combination become the pivot point and the direction of the torque produced by the compression spring is reversed thus enhancing the contact opening process.

    • In a telephone system wherein a number of distant terminals are each connected to a remote terminal and in which a number of remote terminals are each connected to a central office, a distant terminal includes a drop testing circuit for making sequential measurements on a plurality of customer telephones. The drop test circuit is included in a measurement system for providing condition responsive signals describing parameters of the telephone system, The drop test circuit includes circuitry such as scaling resistors, voltage sources, switching elements, and a multiplexed analog to digital voltage-sensing converter for providing digital data for transmission to the remote terminal or other more central location. The remote terminal comprises a computer based analyzer for interpreting, processing, and storing the data transmitted to it. The analyzer, servicing hundreds or thousands of telephones, may accumulate historical data and sophisticated measurements as well as pass-fail data indicating whether the drops to each customer meet conventional standards. The analyzer is further capable of providing all results to conventional drop test survey equipment or to service personnel in a variety of formats.

    • A true n-by-n optical crosspoint matrix switch has n optical fiber outputs each carrying the same light that entered the switch at one of n fiber inputs, maintaining the full optical spectral characteristics although the polarization states may be modified. A mounting plate on a patch panel has an n-by-n array of connection adapters in n rows and no columns. An electromechanical positioning mechanism is utilized to position n input fibers along one row to any of n adapter positions each in a different column on a first side of said plate, and n output fibers along one column to any one of n adapter positions, each in a different row on a second side of said plate. Any input fiber can be connected to any output fiber and none of the adapters are shared by more than one input or one output connector. The electromechanical positioning mechanism includes a pair of cam driven walking legs supporting a fiber carrier one for each column on the first side of said plate and one for each row on the second side of said patch plate. The fiber carriers step linearly from one adapter position to the next, raising and lowering the fiber to break or make connections.

The light source and microwave power applicators are supported by a applicator card, which includes electrical couplings. The card is then adjustablly positioned along one portion in a slot formed in the reflector housing. An adjustable brace may be attached between the reflector housing and the applicator card to finally adjust the light source position for a preferred optical positioning. The brace is then soldered in place to rigidly hold the applicator card in place, yielding a microwave powered vehicle headlamp with a properly and securely positioned light source.
