    • The present invention relates to a lubricating oil additive for internal combustion engines comprising imide and/or ester and/or ester amide derivatives of a reaction product of an unsaturated polyisobutylene and unsaturated reactive dicarboxylic acids and/or anhydrides thereof. The comprised polyisobutylene reaction product has number average molecular weight within the range of 800 to 15 000 and the unsaturated reactive dicarboxylic acids and/or anhydrides thereof are preferably represented by maleic anhydride containing in average 1.6 to 6.0 succinic anhydride derivative per polyisobutylene chain and having concentration of molecules, containing more than one succinic anhydride derivative, higher than 25 percent. Polyisobutylene is grafted or reacted with a copolymer containing succinic anhydride, whereby the copolymer is obtained from a reactive low-molecular co-monomer having molecular weight lower than 500 and containing an olefinic double bond, or from a mixture of such co-monomers and from unsaturated reactive dicarboxylic acid and/or anhydride thereof, preferably maleic anhydride, using molar ratio maleic anhydride : co-monomer : polyisobutylene within the range of 1.2 to 5.5 : 0.1 to 3.5 : 1. Expansion of molecular weight distribution makes less than 70 percent based on the starting polyisobutylene, and succinic anhydride group of the copolymer attached to the polyisobutylene are reacted in the ratio 0.7 to 5.5 with a compound containing at least bifunctional amine and/or hydroxyl groups. A process for preparing such additive is based on an addition reaction by means of which maleic anhydride and the co-monomer with olefinic double bond or a copolymer thereof are grafted to the polyisobutylene in the presence of a radical initiator. The obtained product is then reacted in the presence of a catalyst with compounds containing one or more bifunctional amino and/or hydroxyl groups.
