    • A wind turbine generator (100), or other energy extraction device, has a hydraulic circuit comprising a hydraulic pump (129) driven by a rotating shaft (125) and a hydraulic motor (131) driving an electricity generator (157), or other load. A high pressure manifold (133) extending between the pump and motor is in communication with an accumulator (145, 147, 149). A controller receives a control signal and regulates the displacement of working fluid by the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic motor relative to each other. Thus, power input through the rotating shaft and output to the load can be decoupled for at least a period of time and the energy output of energy extraction device can be varied, for example to smooth the total power output to an electricity grid (101), without compromising power input. A group of energy extraction devices can be controlled in concert to maximise power input while providing smooth power output. Individual electricity generators in different energy extraction devices can be switched on and off in concert to provide smooth power output while benefiting from the reduced energy losses that can be obtained by switching off electricity generators where possible.

    • The invention provides a power generating apparatus of a renewable energy type which generates power from a renewable energy source, the power generating apparatus comprising: a hub on which at least one rotor blade is mounted, the rotor blade receiving energy from the renewable energy source, causing the hub to rotate; a rotating shaft which is connected to the hub; a pump which is secured to the rotating shaft and which is driven by rotation of the rotating shaft; at least one motor which is driven by pressurized hydraulic fluid from the pump; and at least one generator coupled to at least one said motor, wherein the pump and/or at least one motor comprises: a rotatable shaft supported by a plurality of bearings; at least one pair of eccentric cams comprising first and second eccentric cams disposed circumferentially around the shaft; at least one pair of piston cylinder devices comprising first and second piston cylinder devices, each piston cylinder device comprising a piston operable to reciprocate within a cylinder, the pistons of the first and second piston cylinder devices being in force communication with the first and second cams respectively; and a controller in communication with the piston cylinder devices, wherein the first eccentric cam is substantially in antiphase with the second eccentric cam and the first piston cylinder device is positioned substantially opposite the second piston cylinder device, and wherein the controller has an operating mode in which the first and second piston cylinder devices are activated and deactivated substantially in phase with each other such that, when the first and second piston cylinder devices are activated, radial loads exerted on the bearings by the pistons of the first and second piston cylinder devices via the first and second eccentric cams respectively have a cancelling effect on each other. The invention is of particular use in power generating apparatus which are inaccessible for maintenance purposes, such as offshore wind turbines.

    • A fluid working machine has at least one working chamber of cyclically varying volume and low and high pressure valves to regulate the flow of working fluid into and out of the working chamber, from low and high pressure manifolds. The low and high pressure valves are actuated by electronically controlled valve actuation means which, when actuated, applies forces to the low and high pressure valve members to open and/or close the respective valves. The low and high pressure valve members are independently moveable and, although the low pressure valve member typically begins to move quickly in response to a shared valve control signal, the high pressure valve member typically moves only after a change in the pressure within the working chamber. The electronically controlled valve actuation means may be a shared electronically controlled valve actuator, such as a solenoid within a magnetic circuit which directs magnetic flux through both low pressure and high pressure valve armatures which are connected to the respective valve members.

    • Disclosed is a cylinder assembly (1) for a fluid-working machine, the assembly comprising a body (2) having a first end (3) and a second end (4) and comprising a cylinder (5), a poppet valve seat (9) and a face-sealing annular valve seat 7). The cylinder is open to the first end and configured to receive a reciprocating piston (210) and the poppet and annular valve seats extend around an axis through the cylinder. An annular valve including the annular valve seat and an annular valve member extends around the cylinder. Thus, the cylinder assembly is compact. Advantageously, the body is a continuous unitary structure which comprises all of the parts of the body which must be made of, or coated with, a hardened material. Thus the body is stronger and may be constructed with less material than has previously been possible. Additionally, the arrangement of the cylinder body facilitates manufacture, assembly and maintenance of a cylinder assembly and its insertion into the body of a fluid working machine. Further structural features of the cylinder assembly and a fluid working machine comprising one or more cylinder assemblies, are disclosed, which reduce the forces received by the cylinder body (and associated apparatus) in use, enabling the construction of smaller and lighter apparatus.
