摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide electric discharge lamp lighting equipment of proper starting performance. SOLUTION: A polar reversing circuit 2 impresses alternate rectangular waveform voltage to an electric discharge lamp DL, and in an electricity feeding path to the electric discharge lamp DL, an output transformer T1 of an igniter 3 and an inductor L2 are inserted. Generated on timing of the high voltage pulse is controlled by a timing control part 31, which is provided in the control circuit 4. The timing control part 31 makes the igniter 3 generate high voltage pulse, immediately after the polarity of the rectangle waveform voltage, which is impressed to the electric discharge lamp DL, has been reversed. After that, it controls the igniter 3 so as to set up an inhibit period in which the high- voltage pulse cannot be generated, until the polarity of the rectangular waveform voltage is reversed next time.

SOLUTION: A chopper circuit 1 has a variable output to load circuits, containing a polarity reversing circuit 2 and an electric discharge lamp DL and supplies constant current to the load circuit in a period, until the electric discharge lamp DL shifts to a stable lighting state from the start of circuit operation. However, directions are given to a determining part 41 from a lighting distinction part 44, so that the current value, which is in a period until it shifts to a stable lighting state after the confirmation of the lighting, becomes smaller rather than the current value in the period, until the lighting distinction part 44 confirms lighting of the electric discharge lamp DL. The current is set to the current value required for maintaining electric discharge until the lighting is confirmed is set, and after the lighting confirmation, the current is set to the current value which can be shifted to the stable lighting state.

Also a bypass means is provided to reduce the preheat output below a certain level in case the dimming circuit has sunk No.1 high frequency output voltage below its specified level. That is, a choke coil L2 as a bypass means for bypassing of the resonance current is connected in parallel with a filament preheating transformer T3. This should improve deterioration of the lifetime of discharge lamp 2 at the time of dimming.
