    • A magnetic head is fixedly mounted on the cassette holder in a cassette tape recorder. When a taper cassette is inserted into the cassette holder, a magnetic tape is brought into contact with the front face of the magnetic head through an access opening in the tape cassette. In response to selection of stop, fast-forward, and rewind modes of operation, a pad shifter disposed on the cassette holder adjacent to the magnetic head is moved to displace a pad in the tape cassette out of pressed contact with the magnetic tape. When in a recording or playback mode of operation, the pad shifter is retracted to allow the pad to resiliently press the magnetic tape against the magnetic head. The tape recorder is rendered small in size particularly in the transverse direction of the tape cassette inserted.

    • An image reading apparatus such as a copier or facsimile machine for reading an image on a document, comprises: a document placing plate (5) for placing thereon the document (1) and movable reciprocatively; a document placing plate driving mechanism (6) for driving the document placing plate (5) and an image reader (20) for reading the image information on the document. Preferably, a document holding member (8) is provided for ensuring the document to be brought into press-contact with the document placing plate (5). The document placing plate (5) is usually kept in a first position where the document placing plate is housed in the image read apparatus and drawn out therefrom to reach a second position where the document can be set. The image reading apparatus sequentially reads the image information on the document while moving the document placing plate from the second position to the first position.

    • A tape driving mechanism for a magnetic recording apparatus wherein a capstan (1) is rotated to advance a magnetic tape (3) by pinching the magnetic tape (4) between the capstan (1) and a pinch roller (2). The pinch roller (2) is pressed onto the magnetic tape (3) against the capstan. The capstan surface is coated with a diamond-like carbon film (4) which is smooth and highly wear-resistant. The difference between the tangential speed of the capstan and the tape transfer speed is almost zero; thus, the state of contact is static. A static frictional coefficient between the diamond-like carbon film (4) of the capstan (1) and the magnetic tape (3) is almost equal to twice the static frictional coefficient between the metal surface of the capstan and the magnetic tape in the conventional tape driving mechanism. The tape driving force remains sufficient, if the pressure exerted by the pinch roller (2) is reduced to half the value employed in the conventional tape driving mechanism. The diamond-like carbon film (4) may be coated on a rough surface of the capstan (1).
