    • Apparatus, and an associated method, for adaptively controlling filter characteristics of a filter forming part of a receive station, such as a mobile station operable in a cellular communication system. An adaptive parameter unit is provided with signal representations of signals that are to be applied to the filter element. The adaptive parameter unit, responsive to measurement or other analysis of the signal indicia, selects the filter characteristics to be exhibited by the filter. And, the filter characteristics are caused to be selected responsive thereto. Dynamic selection and reselection of the filter characteristics is effectuated in which the response time of the filter is minimized during good signal conditions and increased, to permit increased filter operations, during weak signal conditions.

    • An operating system for a medical device pump has a microprocessor controlling the operation of the pump features in a manner to minimize power consumption and maximize the life of the batteries powering the pump. The microprocessor associated with the medical device pump includes a modulation circuit that operates the pump on an intermittent basis and only when a pressure sensor indicates that the pressure asserted by the pump is at a threshold level. The operation of other sensors are powered only in situations when information from the sensor is needed, while other more essential sensors are operated on an intermittent basis by the modulation circuit. A fill sensor is operated intermittently, while a tilt sensor is only activated when a signal is received from the fill sensor. An optical sensor is only activated when the canister is removed from the pump housing, during which the pump is de-powered.

The APD cycler can include a heater tray with load cells configured to measure the weight of fluid contained within a heater bag and/or a drain bag. The load cells can be toggleable between enabled and disabled configurations. The APD cycler can include a pressure-based volume measurement system, which can be used to confirm measurements made by the load cells. In some embodiments, the APD cycler can have algorithms for tracking an estimated patient volume to prevent overfilling the patient.

    • A relatively inexpensive modular component that can be substituted for, or used in conjunction with, an existing smoke detector in a commercially available residential fire-detection alarm comprises: (A) an amperometric sensor for carbon monoxide, in which the reference and counter electrodes are combined either internally into a single auxiliary electrode or externally by electrical shorting; and (b) a simple current-to-voltage converter circuit that converts the current signals from the sensing electrode into amplified voltage signals. The converter circuit is powered by the same battery (usually a 9-volt dry cell) and is connected to the same alarm-triggering circuit that are used in existing residential fire alarms. The sensor-and-converter module is designed to fit into a commercially available smoke-detector-type fire alarm unit. The electrical output of the module is designed to be compatible with the electrical input requirements of the commercial detection circuitry. An alarm fitted with this module provides early warning of hazardous conditions, such as a smoldering fire, a leaky furnace, or an otherwise heavily polluted atmosphere.
