    • Spectrophotometer color measurement with a target illumination system and a reflected illumination sensing system where the target surface is variably spaced from said spectrophotometer. Color correction calibration information corresponding to color measurements for known different spacings of a test target surface from the spectrophotometer are obtained and stored. In use, the spacing of the actual target surface from the spectrophotometer is measured to provide a target spacing information signal. That signal is automatically combined with the stored color correction calibration information for the corresponding distances to provide at least partial correction of color measurement errors of the spectrophotometer for variable spacing of the target surface relative to the spectrophotometer even with low cost fixed focus optics. The spectrophotometer output can be so corrected by changing the target illumination, such as by LED pulse width changes, and/or by corrective adjustment of the measured reflectances.

    • A user of an image forming device selects from among a plurality of pre-stored color rendition dictionaries (CRDs) in order that a set of system process parameter setpoints associated with that CRD may be referenced to bias and/or skew an available color gamut in the direction of a particular nominally out-of-gamut color which the user wishes to produce in a color image output by the image forming device. A capability is included in a color image forming device store and/or update multiple sets of special process parameter setpoints defining a plurality of CRDs each of which may be identified and associated with a specific color in order that requests to print out-of-gamut colors may be satisfied routinely as exceptions to a nominal gamut based on a nominal set of stored setpoints when a CRD is selected and the setpoints associated with that CRD are input for reference by the color image forming device on a temporary basis.

    • A marking engine forms one or more toned patches and/or images on a photoreceptor transfer device such as a photoreceptor belt or drum, either within or outside a main image area. A sensor illuminates the tones patches and/or images on the photoreceptor transfer device using wavelengths outside the photo response range of the photoreceptor transfer device, thereby allowing reflectance values for each toned patch and/or image to be measured without generating ghost images on the photoreceptor transfer device. The sensor supports collection of measured reflectance values from single-color, mixed-color; and multi-separation image-on-image toned patches and/or images directly from the photoreceptor transfer device at rates as high as one or more times per revolution of the photoreceptor transfer device. The measured reflectance values may be used to generate and/or update color stabilization tone reproduction curves.
