    • A digital version of both amplitude and phase of a received optical signal is developed by employing direct differential detection in conjunction with digital signal processing. The signal is split into three copies. An intensity profile is conventionally obtained using one of the copies. Phase information is obtained by supplying each remaining copy to a respective one of a pair of optical delay interferometers that have orthogonal phase offsets, followed by respective balanced intensity detectors. The output of each of the balanced intensity detectors, and the intensity profile, are each converted to respective digital representations. Signal processing is used to develop the phase information from the digital representations of the output of the balanced intensity detector outputs.

    • A digital version of both amplitude and phase of at least one generic polarization component of a received optical signal is developed using dual-polarization direct differential detection with digital signal processing. The received signal is split into orthogonal polarization components, each of which is split into three copies. For each orthogonal polarization component a) an intensity profile is conventionally obtained using a copy and b) phase information is obtained by supplying each remaining copy to a respective one of a pair of optical delay interferometers having orthogonal phase offsets, followed by respective balanced intensity detectors. The outputs the balanced intensity detectors and the intensity profiles are converted into digital representations and used to develop, via signal processing, the optical field information of at least one generic polarization component of the received optical signal. Compensation of impairments, such as PMD, is realized through further processing.

    • A reference harmonic absorption curve of a laser absorption spectrometer, which can include a tunable or scannable laser light source and a detector, can have a reference curve shape and can include a first, second, or higher order harmonic signal of a reference signal generated by the detector in response to light passing from the laser light source through a reference gas or gas mixture. The reference gas or gas mixture can include one or more of a target analyte and a background gas expected to be present during analysis of the target analyte. The reference harmonic absorption curve can have been determined for the laser absorption spectrometer in a known or calibrated state. A test harmonic absorption curve having a test curve shape is compared with the reference harmonic absorption curve to detect a difference between the test curve shape and the reference curve shape that exceeds a predefined allowed deviation and therefore indicates a change in an output of the laser light source relative to the known or calibrated state. One or more operating and/or analytical parameters of the laser absorption spectrometer are adjusted to correct the test curve shape to reduce the difference between the test curve shape and the reference curve shape.
