    • A compound having a repeating unit represented by general formula (I)
              A 1 -M 1 -X-B-Y-M 2 -A 2      (I)
      wherein A 1 and A 2 are terminal chain groups, respectively; M 1 and M 2 are mesogen groups, respectively; X and Y are independently a bonding group selected from -COO- and -OCO-; and B is an aromatic group. The compound exhibits ferroelectric twisted grain boundary liquid crystalline properties over a wide range of temperature, and the crystal phases originating from such structure absorb light over a wide range of spectrum including visible light and, hence, are useful as a material for preparing light controlling devices, optical filters, recording devices, heat-sensitive ink, heat-sensitive pigments, toner pigments and the like, showing high industrial usefulness. Furthermore, the thermolabels, heat-sensitive recording media and the like of the present invention have high coloring and decoloring rates and are less expensive because of having no optically active group.
