    • Method and apparatus for holding an electronic component prior to its placement on a circuit substrate. The component sucked by a sucker is first centered in one direction by closing movements of a first pair of opposed positioning members toward the component, and then centered in another direction normal to the above one direction by closing movements of a second pair of opposed positioning members which occur only after the first pair of positioning members are opened. The first pair of positioning members are provided on an assembly holding the sucker, and the second pair of positioning members are provided on the sucker holder assembly or separately from the sucker holder assembly. In the latter instance, the assembly holding the sucker and the first pair of positioning members are adapted to be movable relative to the separately provided second pair for alignment of the sucker with the separate second pair.

    • Are disclosed a method of detecting a hold-position of an electronic component in which the component is held by an electronic-component holding apparatus, an electronic-component holding apparatus having a hold-position detecting device, and an electronic-component mounting apparatus for mounting an electronic component on a printed-circuit board. The above method includes the steps of emitting light beams in a direction toward the electronic component (W) held by the electronic-component holding apparatus (58, 70), so as to take a projection of the component, and of detecting a position of the projection, thereby detecting the hold-position of the component. The above holding apparatus is characterized in that at least a part of a holding head body (86) which surrounds a center line of a sucking pipe (88) is made of a transparent material, and in that the holding apparatus has the hold-position detecting device which includes a light emitter (146) for emitting light beams in a direction parallel to the center line of the sucking pipe so as to take a projection of the component held by the sucking pipe, and further includes an electronic image device (150) for detecting a position of the projection. The above mounting apparatus has at least one holding head (70) which is stopped at a pair of intervening stops between a receive-stop at which the head receives the component and a mount-stop at which the head mounts the component on the board, at one of the intervening stops the hold-position of the component being detected, at the other intervening stop an incorrect hold-position of the component being adjusted.

    • A method of taking an electronic component or chip out of each of plural pockets which are formed at regular intervals along a longitudinal direction of a carrier tape and which have openings in the upper surface of the tape, through vacuum suction of a suction member, while the tape is intermittently fed in a feeding direction parallel to its longitudinal direction, including the steps of: (a) bringing the pockets having the chips, into a position where their openings are covered with a covering device having a notch with a width narrower than that of the chip and wider than that of the suction member; (b) feeding the tape by the regular interval in the feeding direction, and permitting a leading chip of the chips covered with the covering device to be brought into a suction position where the leading chip is right below the suction member and the notch; (c) lowering the suction member through the notch so as to allow the suction member to suck and hold the leading chip; (d) retracting the covering device while the tape is kept stationary, so as to clear the covering device from above the leading chip held by the suction member; and (e) lifting the suction member to take the leading chip out of the pocket. An apparatus for taking a chip out of a carrier tape is also disclosed.

    • An electronic-component supplying cartridge is provided which includes a movable and an immovable jumping-out-preventing member and is free from jumping of electronic components out of electronic-component accommodating pockets, changing of posture of the components, or standing-up of the components due to suction. A shutter 210 is attached to a cover 82 fixed to a cartridge frame, such that the shutter 210 is movable relative to the cover 82 in the tape feeding direction. The shutter 210 includes a connection portion 214 having a groove 222 opening at a downstream-side end thereof as seen in the feeding direction, and a pair of movable jumping-out-preventing strips 228. When the shutter 210 is moved to a second position thereof, the strips 228 are received in receiving recesses 200, respectively. When a component carrier tape is fed, the shutter 210 is moved to a first position thereof where the strips 228 cover a component accommodating pocket fed to an electronic-component picking-up position. A component-suction nozzle is moved downward in synchronism with the retracting movement of the shutter 210 to the second position, so that the nozzle holds by suction an electronic component through the groove 222 before completion of the retracting movement of the shutter 210. Since the component is not freed before being held by the nozzle, the component does not jump out of the carrier tape.
