摘要： A thermal ink-jet printer (10) including a paper advancing mechanism (14) and a pen traversing mechanism (18) and a pen (20) is disclosed. The pen (20) includes a nozzle plate portion (22) which includes irregularly spaced columns of nozzles (24) for staggering application of inks onto the print medium (16) such that a drying time is provided between applications of differing inks to adjacent areas. The printer (10) further includes a platen heater assembly (68) as a means of fixing and drying the ink on the print medium (16), and a vacuum fan (62) and an associated plurality of platen vacuum holes (74) as a means of holding the print medium (16) in close contact with the heater plate assembly (68), thus increasing efficiency of heat transfer. The printer (10) is characterized in that it is capable of producing, at relatively high speeds on ordinary untreated paper or other print medium, a highly defined image relatively free from the problems of color bleeding, feathering, ink coalescence, and paper cockle normally associated with ink-jet printers. The primary usage of the printer (10) is in computer generated data printout applications.

摘要： Molecular systems are provided for electric field activated switches, such as a crossed-wire device or a pair of electrodes to which the molecular system is linked by linking moieties. The crossed-wire device comprises a pair of crossed wires that form a junction where one wire crosses another at an angle other than zero degrees and at least one connector species connecting the pair of crossed wires in the junction. The connector species comprises the molecular system, which has an electric field induced band gap change, and thus a change in its electrical conductivity, that occurs via one of the following mechanisms: (1) molecular conformation change; (2) change of extended conjugation via chemical bonding change to change the band gap; or (3) molecular folding or stretching. Nanometer-scale reversible electronic switches are thus provided that can be assembled easily to make cross-bar circuits, which provide memory, logic, and communication functions.

The printer consists of a low power, electrode array that images the surface of a paper-like, rewritable sheet. The sheet is responsive to pixel-sized electric fields produced by each electrode, resulting in a pixel array that is imaged in response to field polarity. The sheet is coated with a rewritable colorant that is a highly energy efficient, bistable, bi-modal molecular layer, requiring energy only to change an image, not to hold or illuminate it.

摘要： A desktop printing system for use with microprocessor-based computers includes the modular combination of a color printer and a monochrome text printer. Preferably, the color printer is of the type which prints color graphics incrementally and the text printer is of the type which prints monochrome text continuously. In operation, printing information is segregated into color and text components, and the color printer is controlled to print only color components while the text printer is controlled to print only monochrome text components.
