    • A method and apparatus automatically associate a sensed mechanical parameter to a range of motor velocity for controlling the rotational velocity of a motor driving a medical instrument. The method and apparatus sense or measure the mechanical parameter whose value, controlled by a human operator, through for example, a footpad, can be measured and converted to a digital signal. The method and apparatus, in response to the measured sensed mechanical parameter, automatically scale the range of parameter values to a new range of motor velocity values thereby adjusting, to the mechanical displacement (force or distance) with which the user is most comfortable. The transformation also provides deadband values around the minimum and maximum motor velocities so that maximum motor velocity is not "chased" and minimum motor velocity is not sensitive to small perturbations due to thermal effects and other events which may affect the mechanical sensor output.

    • A dual function arthroscopic blade provides multiple cutting surfaces of differing cut aggressiveness for selective engagement of the desired cutting blade without retracting the instrument for changing cutting members to apply a different set of cutting edges, or blade. An inner rotating member within a stationary outer cutting member provide cutting edges defined by cutting windows on the inner and outer cutting members, and a rotational drive applies an oscillating rotation such that one of the cutting windows, corresponding to one of the sets of cutting edges, engages an extraction region such as tissue or bone. The use of different sized cutting windows allows variance in the aggressiveness of the cut, and allows selection of another cutting window by rotating the cutting member to align the selected cutting edges without requiring extraction and reinsertion in order to attach a different blade with a different cut aggressiveness.

    • A surgical system includes a first instrument defining a first channel and a second instrument receivable by the first channel. The second instrument defines a second channel. A valve coupled to the first instrument controls fluid flow through the first channel, such that impedance of fluid flow through the first channel is substantially the same without the second instrument received in the first channel and with the first channel partially blocked by the second instrument. In another aspect, a surgical apparatus includes an outer member and an inner member received within the outer member to define a first channel therebetween. The inner member houses an optical lens and defines a second channel for receiving a surgical instrument. The first and second channels are configured such that a pump having an inflow rate of up to about 0.7 L/min connected to the second channel can maintain fluid pressure inside an organ.
