    • A refrigerant recovery system comprises a compressor driven recovery machine having inlet and outlet ports, a primary refrigerant receiving and storage vessel having liquid and vapor ports, and a secondary refrigerant receiving and storage vessel having an inlet. During the refrigerant recovery process the refrigerant circuit outlet is coupled to the primary vessel liquid port, the primary vessel vapor port is coupled to the recovery machine inlet port, and the recovery machine outlet port is coupled to the vapor inlet of the secondary vessel. Operation of the recovery machine draws liquid refrigerant into the primary vessel at a high flow rate while withdrawing refrigerant vapor from the primary vessel, converting the withdrawn vapor to liquid refrigerant, and forcing the liquid refrigerant into the secondary vessel at a liquid refrigerant flow rate substantially less than the liquid refrigerant inflow rate to the primary vessel. The use of the primary vessel interposed between the refrigerant circuit and the recovery machine greatly increases the machine's refrigerant recovery rate compared to the conventional connection of the machine only to a refrigerant receiving and storage vessel at its outlet end. Each of the vessels is provided with a safety cutoff switch which, via electrical circuitry interconnected between the switches and the machine compressor, operates to shut off the machine compressor when the liquid refrigerant level in the vessel reaches a predetermined maximum level.

    • A curved bur with an inner flexible member that is rotatably positioned within an outer tube. The curved bur has a design that constrains the flexible inner coil within the outer tube as the curved bur is rotated (without permitting the coil to stretch and to allow the bur tip to come out of the distal end of the outer tube). To ensure containment of the flexible coil within the outer tube, the outer tube is provided with a constraining neck feature at its distal end to allow the flexible inner assembly to be constrained within the outer tube, and to prevent bur extrusion. The constraining neck feature also centers the bur tip and prevents bur wobble. The curved bur may have a convex or concave bend configuration.

    • A shaver blade assembly useable in either an irrigation-only mode, an aspiration-only mode or an irrigation/aspiration mode. The shaver blade assembly has a stationary elongated outer tube and a movable (e.g. rotatable) elongated inner tube, both inner and outer tubes having hubs attached to their proximal ends for attachment to a handpiece which provides power to move the inner blade relative to the outer blade. The inner and outer tubes are provided with cutting windows at their distal tips and the relative movement between these cutting windows acts to cut tissue during surgical procedures. The outer tube is provided with a fluid inlet port at the proximal end of its tubular surface and a fluid adapter is selectively attachable to the outer tube so as to provide a means for introducing irrigating fluid into the fluid port. The adapter is integrally formed with sealing surfaces which obviate the need for O-rings and the like. A longitudinally extending irrigating channel is provided between the inlet fluid port at one end of the irrigating channel and the outlet fluid port at the distal end of the irrigating channel by which fluid is communicated to the vicinity of the cutting windows when the shaver blade is used in the irrigation-only mode or the irrigation/ aspiration mode. The channel may be either the annular clearance space itself or a separate, dedicated groove or channel formed in the mating surfaces of the tubular members. Removing the adapter and the fluid supply enables the shaver to continue being used in an aspiration-only mode.

    • A composite braiding apparatus has a rotatable cantilever mandrel support 20 that is capable of supporting multiple mandrels 17a and 17b. The mandrels can be properly oriented to be braided without removing them from the mandrel support 20. Once the braiding operation has begun on one mandrel 17, subsequent mandrels can be mounted on the mandrel support 20 while braiding is taking place. Then, when a braiding operation is completed, the other mandrel 17 can be moved into proper position for braiding. The invention also allows one mandrel 17a (or 17b) to be braided while the opposite mandrel 17b (or 17a) that is not being braided can be worked on manually without stopping the braiding operation. In accordance with another embodiment of the invention, a braiding apparatus 10' has two braid ring assemblies 11a and 11b. Both braiding rings 12a and 12b are mounted at opposite ends of a guide track 26. The inclusion of the second braiding ring 12b allows a second set of composite filaments 28 to be wound onto a mandrel 17a (or 17b) by a 180 degree rotation of the mandrel support 20, and possibly allows simultaneous braiding of two mandrels 17a and 17b.
