    • In one example embodiment, an information processing system includes an image pickup apparatus connected to a microscope having a stage configured to support an observation target object. In this example embodiment, the stage has a first position. The information processing system has a buffer having an amount of data. In response to the amount of data including a predetermined amount, the information processing system causes the stage to move from the first position to a different position. In response to the amount of data including the predetermined amount, the information processing system causes the buffer to, while the stage is moving, store images associated with the observation target object. In one example embodiment, the images are continuously captured by the image pickup apparatus. Thereafter, the information processing system, in response to the amount of data not including the predetermined amount, causes the image pickup apparatus to terminate capturing the images.

    • The present invention provides, for the first time, the finding that Smac/DIABLO is underexpressed in cancers such as renal cell carcinoma. In particular, the present invention provides methods of diagnosing and providing a prognosis for cancers that underexpress Smac/DIABLO, as well as methods of drug discovery to identify therapeutics useful when used alone or in combination with other cancer therapeutics. The present invention also provides methods of treating or inhibiting cancers that underexpresses Smac/DIABLO, in which potentiation of Smac/DIABLO expression and/or activity sensitizes resistant tumor cells to cytotoxic treatments including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy. Compositions, kits, and integrated systems for carrying out the diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic methods of the present invention are also provided.

    • An image pickup apparatus comprises a solid-state image pickup device including a plurality of light receiving areas, charge transfer areas, charge-reading gate areas and an output portion, a synchronous signal generator for producing line and frame synchronous signals, a timing signal generator for producing selectively a first internal frame synchronous signal in synchronism with the frame synchronous signal and a second internal frame synchronous signal asynchronous with the frame synchronous signal and for forwarding a charge-reading timing signal and a charge-transfer timing signal each synchronizing with the first or second internal frame synchronous signal, a driving signal generator for producing a gate driving signal and a charge-transfer driving signal in response to the charge-reading timing signal and the charge-transfer timing signal, respectively, and for supplying charge-reading gate areas and charge transfer areas with the gate driving signal and the charge-transfer driving signal, respectively, and a control unit operative, in response to a light-receiving command signal supplied thereto, to cause the timing signal generator to forward the charge-reading timing signal and the charge-transfer timing signal each synchronizing with the second internal frame synchronous signal during a predetermined period so that a light receiving period for the solid-state image pickup device is determined in response to the second internal frame synchronous signal.
