    • A machine translation processor according to the present invention includes an input section having a keyboard with a partial translation command key, a translation processing section having dictionaries for performing translation of an original sentence, a time measuring section for measuring the actual translation time performed in the translation processing section, a memory for storing both the original and translation sentences, a dividing section for dividing the original sentence into phrases in accordance with a predetermined rule for division, and a control section for controlling the translation of the original sentence such that when the partial translation command key is operated or the actual translation time measured reaches a predetermined maximum translation time, the original is divided into phrases by the dividing section and the phrases are translated by the translation processing section. Overall translation time is reduced by dividing the difficult original sentence into phrases that may easily translated.

    • An input processing system inputs character string data including kanji characters and corresponding to phonetic data by entering phonetic data. An input device sequentially inputs phonetic data and sentence end data. A conversion section includes a conversion processor, a syntactic analyzer, and a priority order alterator. The conversion processor sequentially converts character string data in a predetermined conversion unit. If single phonetic data includes a plurality of conversion possibilities in the predetermined conversion unit, character string data is selected according to a predetermined priority order, thereby obtaining character string data (including kanji characters) corresponding to input phonetic data. The syntactic analyzer performs syntactic analysis of a sentence consisting of the character string data in response to sentence end data. The priority alterator alters the priority orders of the conversion possibilities corresponding to identical phonetic data for the conversion processor according to syntactic analysis results, and alters the already selected possibilities as needed. The character string data from the conversion processor in the conversion section is displayed on a diplay.

    • A translation word learning scheme for a machine translation capable of learning translation words for each lexical rule separately and easily. In this scheme, a translation word for each original word is obtained by a machine translation using a translation dictionary storing headwords in the first language, a plurality of lexical rules for each headword, and at least one candidate translation word in the second language corresponding to each lexical rule. Then, a change of a translation word from that obtained by the machine translation to another translation word specified by a user is learned by registering a learning data indicating a headword, a top candidate translation word corresponding to a lexical rule applied in translating this headword, and the specified translation word. This specified translation word is used in subsequent translations only when an original word and a top candidate translation word for this original word obtained by the machine translation coincide with the headword and the top candidate translation word indicated in the learning data.

    • A machine translation system has an input section, an original storage section for storing an original sentence input by the input section, a dictionary section storing linguistical information necessary for translation processing, a translation processing section for obtaining a translated sentence from the original sentence with reference to the linguistical information, a translation storage section for storing the translated sentence, a display section for displaying the original and translated sentences on predetermined display regions, respectively, and an edit processing section for performing edit processing for the original and translated sentences displayed on the display section. The edit processing section detects position information of information input by the input section, which indicates an input position on a display screen, and discriminates whether or not the position information corresponds to a predetermined new input region on which a newly input original sentence is displayed. When the position information corresponds to the new input region, the edit processing section stores the input original sentence in the original storage section.
