    • A method of, and apparatus for, manufacturing a metal can (1) with an annular seam (5) which is capable of withstanding high internal pressures and resisting chemical action. A piece of thermoplastic tape is heat bonded to the outer surface (10a.sub.3) of the open end portion (10a ) of a first can section (10) so as to leave a portion (11a) projecting therefrom. After being bent radially inwardly of the first can section, the projecting tape portion is further folded back into forced contact with the inner surface (10a.sub.2) of the open end portion of the first can section by means of a mandrel (16). The open end portion of the first can section is then heated, with the fold of the tape held pressed against its inner surface by the mandrel, to cause adhesion of the thermoplastic tape to the outer surface, edge (10a.sub.1), and inner surface of the open end portion of the first can section. An adhesive layer (4) is thus provided. This open end portion of the first can section is then press-fitted in the open end portion (2a) of a second can section (2), and the joint (44) therebetween is heated to cause adhesion of the lapping open end portions of the can sections to each other via the adhesive layer.

    • There is provided a method of making a metallic container having a predetermined or standard height and a circumferential seam of the type which is formed by fitting a first open end portion of an upper can body having a venting portion and a second open end portion of a lower can body having a bottom portion to each other with a heat sealable adhesive layer therebetween to form a metallic container preform having a fitted portion, and heating the fitted portion thereby to fuse the adhesive layer.The container preform is placed between a first member and a second member which are oppositely disposed with a predetermined distance therebetween, such that the venting portion faces the first member and the bottom portion faces the second member, then the fitted portion is heated, simultaneously the internal pressure of the container preform is allowed to enhance, and the axial outward slip between the first and second open end portions through the fused adhesive layer which is caused by the elevated internal pressure, is suppressed by the first and second members.

    • Disclosed is a metal vessel comprising upper and lower members, each of which consists of a seamless molded metal cup having a protecting resin cover layer, the open end portions of the upper and lower members being lap-bonded to each other through an adhesive to form a circumferential side seam, said metal vessel being characterized in that the open end portion defining the inner side of the circumferential side seam has a layer of a thermoplastic resin adhesive tape heat-bonded along the entire circumference of said end portion while wrapping the end edge and adjoining inner and outer side faces therein, a layer located on the outer side face of the adhesive tape is extended along the lap-bonded portion, and the adhesive layer present in the lap-bonded portion satisfies the following requirement: ##EQU1## wherein S1 stands for the sectional area (mm.sup.2) of the adhesive layer present in the lap-bonded portion, lo stands for the width (mm) of the lap-bonded portion, and t.sub.o stands for the thickness (mm) of the adhesive tape present on the inner side of the inner open end portion.
