    • A projector capable of compactizing the structure and improving the efficiency of light utilization is disclosed. The projector has an illuminating system, a light modulation device and a projection optical system. A first and a second lights of mutually different colors are emitted from the illumination optical system. The light modulating device has a first light modulator for modulating the first light according to a first image signal and a second light modulator for modulating the second light according to a second image signal. Each of the first and second light modulators is provided with a grating, a liquid crystal filled in the grooves of the grating and a driver for driving the molecules of the liquid crystal. The driver is adapted to drive the molecules of the liquid crystal in such a manner that the liquid crystal and the grating have mutually substantially matching refractive indexes in a certain state but have mutually unmatched refractive indexes in another state, thereby generating or substantially erasing a diffraction grating by the grating and the liquid crystal. A first and a second images of mutually different colors are projected on a screen by the first and second lights from the first and second light modulators.

    • An optical apparatus to be used for digital still cameras for setting any one of a plurality of lenses in a picture taking (image capturing) position comprising a lens turret rotatable around an axis and having the lenses mounted thereon, a driving mechanism to rotate the lens turret so that one of the lenses can be set at the picture taking position and a means to adjust and extend the back focal length of the lens shaped like a column or square column and made of glass, plastic or the like that has higher refraction index than that of air. By said means of back focal length adjustment, the position of the lens with shorter focal length can be fixed on the lens turret moving apart from the image sensor like CCD or C-MOS upward without changing its focal length itself, and fixed at the same level thereon as the lens with longer focal length. With this adjustment of back focal length, the lenses can be fixed on the turret as closely as possible with each other, yet any part of one lens does not cut in or disturb any part of light path of the other lens. Consequently the total size of lens turret could be minimized.

    • An optical multiplexing and demultiplexing device of a type using a lens and a diffraction grating, which incorporates a waveguide array having waveguide channels with narrow spacings for facilitating high resolution, where the narrow spacings are realized by forming an etching groove between each adjacent waveguide channels and providing a measure for preventing optical coupling among the waveguide channels in the form of an air gap, or a layer having a refractive index lower than a cladding layer, or a layer for absorbing/reflecting light, which is provided in the etching groove. The device also incorporates a reflection mirror for reflecting the initially diffracted lights from the diffraction grating back to the diffraction grating, such that the diffracting grating diffracts the diffracted lights reflected back from the reflection mirror again to produce wavelength division multiplexed/demultiplexed optical signals in high resolution.

    • A disc camera advances a film disc by an oscillating pawl engaging the disc film notches previously used for indexing. The pawl is carried on a member pivotably mounted on the side of the rear film chamber wall remote from the chamber and passing through an opening in this wall. The limits of movement of this member are determined by the height of a lobe of a rotating cam driving the pawl system and by other mechanical limit stops. An end-of-film sensing pin is provided which passes through the rear film chamber wall of the camera and engages the face of the film disc hub directly. When the pin drops into the film disc hub, the film advance motor circuit is rendered inoperative. A single printed circuit board placed near and parallel to the side of the film chamber wall remote from the film chamber carries the DC motor, shutter-cocking and the pawl-oscillating mechanism. The pawl carrying member is pivoted on this wall. A film flattening shroud frame on the rear chamber wall has only its tangentially disposed faces or edges contacting the film disc so that the other two margins thereof do not contact the portion of the film to be exposed during film advancement.
