    • A method of watermarking a video signal comprises encoding the video signal using a plurality of encoding parameters and, during said encoding, varying a value of at least a selected one of said parameters with time according to a watermarking pattern, the selected parameter being a parameter that affects at least a type or an amount of information lost in encoding the signal. An example of a suitable parameter is a quantization factor used to encode the video signal. The quantization factor may correspond to a particular coefficient of a transform used to encode the video signal, and may, for example, be an element of a quantization matrix corresponding to a particular coefficient in a block DCT transform. The method may conveniently be implemented in devices with limited processing resources, such as existing DVRs, by means of a software update, yet enables those devices to imprint a signal they encode with a robust watermark which may survive subsequent decompression and recompression. In another aspect, a video signal is watermarked by modifying a magnitude of at least one selected non-dc spatial frequency component in a manner which varies with time according to a watermarking pattern. Corresponding watermark detection methods and watermarking devices are disclosed.

    • A method of processing digital content on a content processing device includes receiving digital content that has been protected through encoding and/or scrambling using a predetermined algorithm. Additionally, an obfuscated computer program is received that is associated with the protected digital content for execution by the processing device. The program includes authentication instructions for performing authentication of the processing device and conversion instructions for performing at least a part of decoding and/or descrambling of the protected digital content in dependence on a response of the processing device to an authentication challenge. According to the method, a multi-round zero-knowledge algorithm is used for authenticating the processing device. Execution of respective rounds of the zero-knowledge algorithm is time-sequentially intermixed with content conversion of sequential parts of the digital content.

    • For some video processing applications, most notably watermark detection (40), it is necessary to add or average (parts of) the two interlaced fields which make up a frame. This operation is not trivial in the MPEG domain due to the existence of frame-encoded DCT blocks. The invention provides a method and arrangement for adding the fields without requiring a frame memory or an on-the-fly inverse DCT. To this end, the mathematically required operations of inverse vertical DCT (321) and addition (322) are combined with a basis transform (323). The basis transform is chosen to be such that the combined operation is physically replaced by multiplication with a sparse matrix (32). Said sparse matrix multiplication can easily be executed on-the-fly. The inverse basis transform (35) is postponed until after the desired addition (33, 34) has been completed.
