    • Methods and apparatus relating to encoding and decoding stereoscopic (3D) image data, e.g., left and right eye images, are described. Various pre-encoding and post-decoding operations are described in conjunction with difference based encoding and decoding techniques. In some embodiments left and right eye image data is subject to scaling, transform operation(s) and cropping prior to encoding. In addition, in some embodiments decoded left and right eye image data is subject to scaling, transform operations(s) and filling operations prior to being output to a display device. Transform information and/or scaling information may be included in a bitstream communicating encoded left and right eye images. The amount of scaling can be the same for an entire scene and/or program.

    • A display device for information signals which performs highly efficient image display of a standard television signal, a high definition television signal, a progressive scanning television signal or a stereoscopic television signal on the same screen has a first signal input unit applied with the standard television signal, a second signal input unit applied with the high definition television signal, progressive scanning television signal or stereoscopic television signal, a mode designation unit for designating a mode for display of one of the signals, a signal conversion unit including a write unit for writing the first signal, at a frequency thereof, to memories and a read unit for reading the memories at a frequency which is nearly twice that of the first signal, a signal switching unit, a signal processing unit and a deflection switching unit, whereby a first display signal from the signal conversion unit or a second display signal from the second input terminal is selected and image-displayed on the same display unit through a deflection system. Through this, the cost of the device can be reduced, the standard television signal having less scanning lines can be displayed with substantially the same number of scanning lines as that of the high definition television signal, various kinds of disturbances can be eliminated to improve the image quality and a stereoscopic image can also be displayed.

    • A stereoscopic television system has first and second openings through which light rays reflected from an object to be viewed enter. The system includes a first polarizer polarizing the light rays passing through the first opening and a second polarizer polarizing light rays passing through the second opening. The polarization planes of the first and second polarizers are different from each other. Optics are provided for aligning the center axes of the light rays passing through the first and second openings to generate aligned light rays. A polarizer switch receives the aligned light rays and selectively and alternately passes light rays polarized by one of the first and second polarizers. A zoom lens is provided for optically treating the aligned light rays for zoom operation. A video camera converts optical images of the light rays passing through the polarizer switch and the zoom lens into electrical signals corresponding to the light rays passing through the first and second openings. A television system then displays an image of the object, based on the electrical signals.
