摘要： An optical transmission device using return-to-zero optical pulses as transmission optical pulses, which is capable of enhancing a transmission distance as well as a wavelength range with satisfactory transmission characteristics and enabling an easy realization of the wavelength division multiplexing optical transmission. The optical transmission device is formed by an optical transmitter for transmitting transmission optical pulses by superposing digital data signals onto return-to-zero optical pulses, and a modulator for applying one of a phase modulation and a frequency modulation in synchronization with a transmission rate of the transmission optical pulses, to the transmission optical pulses transmitted by the optical transmitter. This optical transmission device can be utilized in forming a wavelength division multiplexing optical transmission apparatus and an optical transmission system.

摘要： An optical amplifying-repeating transmission system is disclosed which is composed of an optical fiber (2) for transmitting a lightwave signal with digital information added to return-to-zero lightwave pulses and a plurality of optical amplifying repeaters (3) inserted in the optical fiber for transmission use. The mean value of wavelengths at which the wavelength dispersion of the optical fiber is zero is smaller than the wavelength of the lightwave signal which is transmitted over the system. The accumulated wavelength dispersion value of the optical fiber tends to increase with the distance of transmission, from a macroscopic viewpoint. The optical fiber for transmission is divided into a plurality of sections. In accordance with the accumulated wavelength dispersion value of the optical fiber in each section except at least the last one, a wavelength dispersion medium, which locally changes the wavelength dispersion in a manner to cancel the accumulated wavelength dispersion in the section at the wavelength of the lightwave signal, is inserted in the section to eliminate the accumulation of the timing jitter.

摘要： A distributed feedback semiconductor device which has a diffraction grating (8) disposed near a light emitting active layer (3), a double hetero structure with the active layer (3) sandwiched between n- and p-type semiconductors (2,4) and n-and p-side electrodes (23, 20-22) for injecting a current into the active layer (3), one of the n- and p-side electrodes being divided into a plurality of electrodes (20-22), and in which a current is injected into the active layer (3) across the n- and p-side electrodes (23, 20-22) for laser oscillation to obtain output light (100, 101). A first current source (50) is connected to each of electrodes into which one of the n- and p-side electrodes is divided, and a second current source (51) is connected to the divided electrodes (20-22) via resistors (52-54), for injecting a current into the active layer (3) in a desired ratio. The first and second current sources (50,51) are controlled in accordance with the light emitting state of the active layer (3). In operation, a current is injected into the active layer (3) through the divided electrodes (20-22) while controlling the injected-current density in the active layer (3) to be uniform in the direction of travel of light until the injected current reaches a threshold current at which the distributed feedback semiconductor laser device starts to oscillate, and a current thereafter injected while controlling the injected-current density to be maximum in at least that region of the active layer in which the light intensity is maximum in the direction of travel of light.

摘要： The purpose of the invention is to detect a surveillance signal in a shorter time without lowering the usable merit of wavelength. The transmission signal transmitting through the optical fiber transmission lines is specified as a light FDM signal multiplexed in wavelength, and the surveillance light signal is interposed in the middle of two adjacent channel slots. The surveillance light signal is produced such that the spread spectrum is applied to the surveillance carrier and thereby a light signal is modulated in intensity. The light FDM signal and surveillance light signal are turned to the facing transmission lines in the optical repeaters to be received by each terminal station, and the modulation rate of the surveillance light signal can be made deeper so that the surveillance signal can be detected in a shorter time.
