    • A rolling mill has a work roll (1), a back-up roll (2) for supporting the work roll (1) vertically and driving it. A plurality of horizontal support rollers (4,6) contact the work roll at barrel diameter outside the rolling region and at both horizontal sides of the work roll and act to fix the position of the work roll in both horizontal directions during rolling and to oppose horizontal rolling forces. In order to reduce the bending of the work roll during rolling, there are provided means for applying horizontal counterbending forces to the work roll comprising members (5,7) e.g. rollers, contacting the work roll at locations axially further from the rolling region than the support rollers (4,6) and actuator means (14) for urging the members (5,7) against the work roll. The counterbending forces being in the same direction as the net horizontal force applied to said work roll by said back-up roll and the material being rolled. Preferably at least one condition of said work roll is sensed during rolling, and there are control means acting during rolling to control the counterbending forces in dependence on the sensed condition.

To eliminate a transversely asymmetrical deflection, a rolling mill comprises a device for measuring horizontal deflections of at least one of the work rolls at axially spaced positions during rolling, a device for comparing values measured on at the axially spaced positions and calculating the difference therebetween, and a horizontal deflection controller for determining whether the difference exceeds a predetermined range or not and imparting a horizontal bending to the one work roll at at least one of the axially spaced positions. This prevents an adverse effect by the work rolls being horizontally deflected in a vertically or transversely asymmetrical way, reduces the diameter of the work rolls, and increases the allowable rolling load. Stable rolling of high-quality strips with good shape or flatness is thus achieved.

    • PURPOSE:To eliminate the brightness difference on front surface and rear at all times and to allow control so as to attain a specific target value by measuring the brightness on the front surface and rear of a strip on the outlet side of a rolling mill and controlling the inflow angle of the strip in such a manner that the difference thereof attains a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:The reflected light of the light projected from an upper light source 10 to a rolled stock 1 on the outlet side of the rolling mill is detected by an upper optical sensor 11 and the reflectivity gU of the upper surface of a strip is measured. The reflectivity gL on the rear surface is similarly measured by a lower light source 12 and a lower optical sensor 13. The measured gU, gL are outputted to a computing element 15 which calculates the brightness difference g. The comparison of the brightness difference g and the target value go is then executed by a comparator 16 and the controlled variable ga to be corrected is calculated. An inflow angle alphais calculated by a computing element 17. Whether the inflow angle alpha is positive or negative is then discriminated by a discriminator 18. An output is delivered to a vertical direction position controller 20 of a roller 19 to control a moving device 21 in the case of positive. An output is delivered to a vertical direction position controller 23 of a roller 22 to control a moving device 24 in the case of negative.

    • PURPOSE:To reduce a crop part at the rear end of a slab and to manufacture a steel sheet in high yield by forming the rear end of the slab to be reduced in width into a shape consisting of a straight part and a slant part before reducing the width of rear end by pressing its both side faces in the sheet width direction of rear end. CONSTITUTION:In reducing the width of a slab throughout its whole length, by transporting the slab, a blank material to be hot rolled, in its longitudinal direction, and pressing both side faces in the width direction of slab by a press tool 3, having a pressing face consisting of a face 3A parallel to the side face and a slant face 3B slanted with respect to the face 3A, by periodically vibrating the tool 3 in the sheet width direction of slab; the side faces of said rear end are previously pressed by another pressing face of tool 3 consisting of a slant face 3D slanted to the slab outlet side and a face 3C parallel to the side face of slab, before reducing the width of the rear end of slab. In this way, an ordinary width reduction is provided to the slab after forming its rear end into the shape consisting of a straight part and a slant part, to reduce the quantity of a crop part and a dog bone generating at the slab rear-end thereby improving the yield in steel sheet manufacturing.
