SOLUTION: The surface-treated zinc-base plated steel sheet has a layer on the surface of the zinc-base plated layer, which is formed by means of applying an aqueous composition containing (a) at least one selected among phosphate, carbonate, nitrate, acetate, fluoride, or hydroxide of each Mg, Al, and Mn, (b) acrylic resin which contains an electron-accepting monomer A and an electron-donating monomer B, (c) an organic acid and/or organic matter capable of coordinating with divalent or higher metal ions, and (d) an acid.

As for the epoxy resin, for example, a straight-chain bisphenol type, phenol-novolac type, cresol type, polyphenol type resin or the like can be used, and preferably, a straight-chain bisphenol epoxy resin is used. As for the acid for modification, carboxylic acids are preferably, and for example, maleic anhydride, sebacic acid, adipic acid or the like are used.

SOLUTION: A dense coating excellent in corrosion resistance or the like and having a thickness of about 0.1-5 μm is formed on the surface of a galvanized steel sheet by treating the galvanized steel sheet with a surface treating agent which contains, by weight, 100 parts water-soluble polymer containing about 1-50 wt.% monomer having a hydroxyl group and about 1-50 wt.% monomer having a carboxyl group, about 10-200 parts acid-modified epoxy resin, and optionally other monomers, acids, heavy metal ions, silane coupling agents or the like. As the monomer having hydroxyl group, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate or the like is preferable, and ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acids or the like are preferable as the monomer having carboxyl group. As the acid-modified epoxy resin, linear bisphenol-type epoxy resins modified with carboxylic acid or the like are suitable.
