摘要： An electromagnetic discharge apparatus including an electrodeless lamp containing a fill material which emits light when subjected to a high frequency electric field. The lamp envelope is generally cylindrical. Power is coupled to the contents of the lamp by electrodes which encircle each end of the envelope and are spaced apart in the central region of the envelope to provide a capacitive gap between them. An inner coaxial conductor is connected to one of the electrodes and an outer conductor is connected to the other electrode by way of a conductive shielding member which encircles the lamp and the electrodes. A heating arrangement may be provided to maintain the temperature and thus the pressure of the fill material within the envelope constant.

摘要： Light source wherein high frequency power is capacitively coupled to a low pressure discharge includes at least one metallized power coupling conductor. A discharge lamp includes an envelope which is typically pear-shaped with a re-entrant cavity. The lamp envelope encloses a fill material which forms during discharge a plasma which emits ultravoilet radiation and typically includes on its inner surface a phosphor coating. An outer conductor is disposed around the outer surface of the lamp envelope. A conductive coating disposed on the inner surface of the re-entrant cavity forms the inner conductor. The outer conductor can be a conductive mesh or can be a conductive coating disposed on the outer surface of the lamp envelope in a pattern which permits light to escape from the lamp. When the conductive coating of the inner conductor is substantially more than one skin depth in thickness at the frequency of operation, the re-entrant cavity is substantially field-free and can be used to house power source circuitry. When the conductive coating of the outer conductor is substantially more than one skin depth in thickness at the frequency of operation, the light source is prevented from radiating high frequency power. A high frequency power source can be included in the light source.

The lamp comprises a light transmitting envelope, having a phosphor coating on its inner surface, enclosing a thermionic cathode for emitting electrons, a pair of anodes for accelerating the electrons and forming electron beams, and a fill material, such as mercury, which emits ultraviolet radiation upon excitation. The two anode configuration provides an extended region of electron beam excitation. In addition, a separate cathode heater filament is not required due to the anode configuration. As a result this lamp is operated with a single power source and only two conductors connecting the power source to the electrodes. This invention further provides a high degree of self-stabilization of discharge current by means of the twin parallel anode configuration.

A single power source and pair of connecting conductors perform both cathode heating current and electrode potential difference functions. In addition, this configuration provides for a greater and more complete discharge of the volume within the envelope than single electrode elements. The present invention permits a higher operating voltage, lower power density and a lower operating temperature for the lamp.

摘要： The lamp shown herein is a beam mode fluorescent lamp for general lighting applications. The lamp comprises a light transmitting envelope, having a phosphor coating on its inner surface, enclosing a pair of thermionic electrodes and a fill material, such as mercury, which emits ultraviolet radiation upon excitation. During application of the first polarity of an AC signal, one electrode acts as a cathode and the other electrode functions as an anode. During the other AC polarity, the electrodes reverse their functions. This invention reduces the requirement for input power to a beam mode discharge lamp without adversely affecting luminous output. This lamp substantially eliminates wasted electron bombardment energy to the anode by use of this energy to help heat the cathode for the next half of the AC cycle. This lamp employs a single power source and may be used in various pre-heat or rapid start configurations.

The spiral line pulse generator includes two conductors and two insulators, each in the form of an elongated sheet, in an alternating arrangement which is rolled together in a spiral configuration having a plurality of turns. The high voltage, short duration pulse is provided upon closure of a low inductance switch coupled between the conductors. A thermal switch can be utilized to bypass the spiral line pulse generator after lamp starting. The spiral line pulse generator can be enclosed within the lamp base of the light source.

摘要： A high pressure sodium lamp, which includes a discharge tube enclosing xenon at pressures in excess of 300 torr, is reliably started by the combination of an igniter, a conductor wrapped around the discharge tube, and a switching circuit. The igniter provides periodic pulses of 2500 to 4000 volts with a duration of at least one microsecond. The switching circuit provides a high voltage pulse having an amplitude about equal to the amplitude of the periodic pulses and a duration much greater than the duration of the periodic pulses. The conductor intensifies the electric field within the discharge tube. A conventional lamp ballast provides ac power during starting and normal operation.
