Disclosed herein is a system for producing a collimated X-ray beam, the system including one or more distributed electron sources configured to produce electron beams, one or more X-ray production targets configured to receive the electron beams and to generate X-ray beams at X-ray focal spots, X-ray optics configured to collect the X-ray beams from the X-ray focal spots, wherein the X-rays optics are configured to focus the X-ray beams to a single virtual focal spot, and an X-ray collimator configured to collimate the X-ray beams from the virtual focal spot to generate the collimated X-ray beam.

Emission in excess of 6 A/cm2 at 7.5 V/μm is demonstrated in a macroscopic emitter array. The emitter has a monolithic and rigid porous semiconductor nanostructure with uniformly distributed emission sites, and is fabricated through a room temperature process which allows for control of emission properties. These electron sources can be used in a wide range of applications, including microwave electronics and x-ray imaging for medicine and security.

One embodiment is a composite material comprising a matrix comprising a thermoelectric material; and an electrically conducting phase disposed within the matrix. The electrically conducting phase has a lower electrical resistivity than the thermoelectric material, and it forms a continuous electrically conducting path through the matrix from a first surface of the material to a second surface of the material. Another embodiment is a device, comprising a thermoelectric element. This element is made of the above composite material. A further embodiment is a thermoelectric system, made of a heat source, a heat sink, and the thermoelectric device disposed in thermal communication with the heat source and heat sink. The system may be configured for power generation or for thermal management.

The material can comprise an electrically conductive thermoplastic composite. At least some of the protrusions can be formed of such composite. The material having the texture surface can exhibit broadband absorption.

A second inlet may be provided to flow in a halide-containing gas in the chamber. The apparatus may further include a controller, which communicates with the various components of the apparatus such as, sensors, valves, and energy source, and may optimize and control the reaction.
