    • An automatic control system for a vacuum-assisted automatic core biopsy device (10) is provided, wherein the automatic core biopsy device (10) comprises a housing (12), out of which extends a needle assembly (14) including a hollow outer piercing needle (16), an inner cutter (18) having a lumen (20), a probe housing (22), and a tissue receiving notch (24). The automatic control system (92) is computerized to move the hollow outer piercing needle (16) automatically to the target tissue lesion, as was true in the prior art, but also is programmed to automatically control the rotational orientation of the piercing needle (16), and its associated tissue receiving notch (24), as well as the axial positioning and rotation of the cutting cannula (18). Consequently, a clinician user need only mark the desired locations within the target location from which tissue samples are desired and the automatic control system will operate the device to retrieve samples from the marked locations.

    • A device is provided for stabilizing and positioning an otherwise hand-held medical instrument, such as a biopsy power driver and probe, to ensure the ability to accurately place the probe into the breast and maintain position relative to a particular tissue site from any desired entry point. The device comprises a main arm having a generally vertical portion and a generally horizontal portion. A clamping assembly permits attachment of the apparatus to a stationary object, which is preferably an examination table, and includes a locking clamp having a gripping mode and a releasing mode for alternately gripping and releasing the main arm, and a lever assembly for actuating the locking clamp between the gripping mode and the releasing mode. A horizontal clamp, attached to the generally horizontal portion of the main arm, provides support for an articulating arm assembly having a first arm portion, or upper arm, and a second arm portion, or forearm, wherein the upper arm and forearm are attached together by an elbow joint, so that they may be articulated relative to one another about a common axis disposed through the elbow. A mounting bracket for securing the biopsy power driver and probe is attached to a distal end of the forearm. The elbow joint attaching the upper arm and forearm of the articulating arm assembly comprises a spring loaded counterbalance mechanism which functions to support the weight of the medical instrument, thereby giving the instrument a weightless feel during the positioning process, which prevents fatigue on the part of a user and therefore permits more delicate and precise movements of the instrument.

    • A device for treating heart disorders, and particularly cardiomyopathy. The device is comprised of a compliant containment structure shaped in a configuration such that it surrounds and encases the heart. Within this containment structure are housed two or more inflation pockets that are fabricated from a non-elastic compliant material. These pockets are disposed on the interior surface of the containment structure and are configured to oppose and support the external wall of at least one of the ventricles of the heart. In the preferred embodiment, there are a plurality of relatively small, spaced inflation pockets disposed to act against each ventricle which is to be contained.

A proximal portion of the implanted component near the first site and is attached to the guidewire. The proximal portion of the implanted component is pulled through the patient's body and out the second site with the transfer guidewire assembly.

    • An inspection instrument has an elongated flexible body which extends between a control assembly at a proximal end and an objective head at a distal end. Fiber optic bundles disposed within the instrument permit the illumination and the imaging of the interior regions of a structure being inspected. An articulating vertebrae assembly and a transitional coupler are disposed proximally of the objective head whereby the objective head is caused to move in an arc when tension is applied to interiorly disposed cables connecting the objective head to the control assembly. The vertebrae assembly is comprised of individual hollow vertebrae which are disposed along and axially aligned by a resilient stiffening member which is fixed at a distal end within the objective head and at a proximal end within the coupler. The member provides flexibility to the vertebrae assembly and, because it has a rectangular cross-sectional area, resists a torsion about its longitudinal axis, thus making the distal end of the instrument torque stable.
