    • A high-frequency oscillator ventilator has a first gas conduit with an opening for gas connection with a patient's airways and a bias gas flow inlet and a bias flow outlet disposed to define therebetween a flow path for a bias gas within the first conduit. An oscillator operable to alternately introduce a volume of additional gas from a source into, and to withdraw at least the same volume of gas from, the first gas conduit, thereby inducing pressure oscillations in gas within the first conduit to move gas along a path intersecting the flow path for a bias gas alternately into and out of the opening at a predetermined high-frequency dependent on the output of a control signal generator.

    • The present invention relates to a method of delivering combined positive and negative pressure assist ventilation to a patient, wherein a positive pressure is applied to the patient's airways to inflate the patient's lungs, a negative pressure is applied around the patient's ribcage and/or abdomen in order to reduce a load imposed by the ribcage and/or abdomen on the patient's lungs, and application of the positive and negative pressures is synchronized. The present invention also relates to a system for delivering combined positive and negative pressure assist ventilation to a patient, comprising a positive pressure ventilator connected to the patient's airways for applying a positive pressure to the patient's airways to inflate the patient's lungs, a negative pressure ventilator installed on the patient's ribcage and/or abdomen for applying a negative pressure around the patient's ribcage and/or abdomen in order to reduce a load imposed by the ribcage and/or abdomen on the patient's lungs, and a contmller for synchronising operation of the positive and negative pressure ventilators.

    • A ventilator for respirator treatment includes a gas delivery unit and a regulating unit arranged to control the gas delivery unit to deliver gas to a patient according to prescribed parameter values to obtain sufficient ventilation of the patient. Sensors are provided for sensing respiration efforts of the patient and to control the regulating unit to adapt an operation cycle of the gas delivery unit to sensed respiration efforts of the patient. The regulating unit controls the gas delivery unit also to deliver a pressure or volume support to the respiration of the patient to a predetermined resulting total pressure or volume level. If an apnea exceeding a predetermined length of time is detected by the sensor, the regulating unit controls the gas delivery unit to deliver gas to the patient according to the aforementioned prescribed parameter.
