    • An EMAT device for non-destructive inspection of the surface of a tube for cracks using acoustic surface waves includes a pulsed magnet having an active surface for facing the surface of a tube to be inspected. A receive emat coil is on the active surface and a transmit emat coil is on the opposite surface of the receive coil. The transmit emat coil has a scan surface for scanning over the tube surface. A transmitter for generating and transmitting an RF signal to the transmit emat coil is provided for generating a transmitted acoustic wave signal along the tube, the transmitted wave creating a reflected acoustic wave if a crack in the tube is encountered, the reflected wave generating a reflection signal in the receive emat coil. A receiver is connected to the receive emat coil for receiving the reflection signal. A digital computer is connected to the receiver for receiving and for processing the reflection signal and a display displays information about a crack in the tube which created the reflected acoustic wave and resulting reflection signal.

    • A transmitting and receiving switch assembly for an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) and a method for selectively switching an EMAT between transmit mode and receive mode both use a particular circuit. This circuit contains an EMAT coil coupled to a tuning capacitor, which allows the EMAT to be operated at a desired frequency when transmitting. A set of capacitors separates the EMAT coil from a set of diode strings (preferably containing at least one fast switching silicon diode), which are joined by a resistive connection. A transformer, which is center tapped at its primary winding, is coupled to the other end of the diode strings. Finally, a receiver input is connected to the transformer. In operation, the frequency of the EMAT is set by appropriately energizing and tuning the tuning capacitor. A voltage is then applied in the center tapped transformer and in the resistive link between the diode strings. The current automatically switches the conductivity of the diodes and permits the EMAT to switch modes as desired. Likewise, the method disclosed also utilizes this circuit, as described above, and involves several steps. First, the EMAT frequency must be selected and set, using the tuning capacitor. Then, a voltage is applied within the circuit to induce transmission by the EMAT. Next a sinusodial toneburst is given within the circuit to switch the transmit/receive capabilities of the EMAT, and then observing the input received by the EMAT-thereby permitting the alternate switching of the EMAT from receive to transmit mode in a matter of nanoseconds.

    • A shield for an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) has multiple layers of electrically insulating and electrically conductive materials which contain a coil of the EMAT. A first insulating layer lies directly on top of the coil and is attached thereto by a suitable layer of non-conductive adhesive. A second layer having both insulating and conductive portions is provided on a side of the coil opposite the first insulating layer such that the coil is completely encapsulated within and in direct contact only with the insulating portions of the first and second layers. The insulating portion of the second layer has a high electrical resistance. A third, conductive layer having a conductive adhesive side is provided in contact with the conductive portion of the second layer. The third layer is also provided with a window extending completely therethrough having dimensions coextensive with those of the coil; shielding of the coil itself by this third layer is thus prevented. Finally, a fourth insulating layer preferably made of a thin layer of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene or similar insulating material is attached to the underlying third, conductive layer by adhesive means.An alternative shield and coil arrangement is also disclosed, wherein the coil is etched on one side of a substrate and a corresponding shield configuration is etched on the other side, resulting in an integrated shield and coil assembly for use in an electromagnetic acoustic transducer.

    • A noncontact ultrasonic transducer for studying the acoustic properties of a metal workpiece includes a generally planar magnetizing coil positioned above the surface of the workpiece, and a generally planar eddy current coil between the magnetizing coil and the workpiece. When a large current is passed through the magnetizing coil, a large magnetic field is applied to the near-surface regions of the workpiece. The eddy current coil can then be operated as a transmitter by passing an alternating current therethrough to excite ultrasonic waves in the surface of the workpiece, or operated as a passive receiver to sense ultrasonic waves in the surface by measuring the output signal. The geometries of the two coils can be varied widely to be effective for different types of ultrasonic waves. The coils are preferably packaged in a housing which does not interfere with their operation, but protects them from a variety of adverse environmental conditions.
