    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a method for operating a coke oven as carries out more effectively the repairs for the wall surfaces and ceilings, by measuring exactly the shapes of the wall surfaces and ceilings of a carbonization chamber and by grasping quantitatively the state of the carbon adsorption and wear on the wall surfaces and ceilings.
      SOLUTION: The operating method comprises: by means of an electromagnetic wave range finder provided with the main body 2 and with the antenna 3A for oven walls which is placed on the tip of the extruding ram 1 of an extrusion apparatus 5, an antenna position-referring brilliance point (c) placed on the tip of the extruding ram, standard brilliance points (b1) and (b2) placed at a furnace entrance, and of a camera 9 for observing each brilliant point; calculating a traveling locus of the extrusion ram point from the result of photographing each brilliance point; calculating the absolute shape of the carbonization chamber wall surface with correcting the result measured with the electromagnetic wave range finder at the time of extrusion by using the traveling locus of the extrusion ram; after the finish of the wall repairs, measuring the absolute shape of the wall surfaces at every operation; and grasping quantitatively the shape of the carbon adsorption or wear on the wall surfaces from the absolute shape change on the wall surfaces immediately after the repair finish; and then determining the time of carrying out the repairs for the wall surfaces from the change record along with the operation.
