    • Disclosed is a swivel assembly with multiple fluid bearings. The embodiment shown is a rotatable liner swivel assembly to be used, in conjunction with a liner hanger, cam dog assembly, and setting tool, for placing and cementing a liner in a well. Fluid-filled annular bearing chambers in the swivel assembly support the load of the liner pipe string, and permit the rotation of the liner pipe string with respect to the liner hanger during the cementing process. The bearing chambers are interconnected to equalize the fluid pressure and distribute the load uniformly over the bearing chambers.

    • An assembly for installation within the end of a joint of casing or liner for use in a downhole environment where the casing or liner is disposed in the borehole which traverses earth formations. The assembly includes an annular split ring expander and an annular split ring slip element and a self-energizing packing element which has an interference fit with respect to the bore of a string of pipe. A mechanically operated setting tool has a set of nut members on a threaded mandrel which are selectively operated for setting the slip element of the assembly into a wedging engagement with the expander in the wall of a well pipe and for releasing the setting tool from the body of the assembly to leave the assembly installed within the end of a joint of casing or liner.

    • Disclosed is a retrievable, weight set well packer which may be tightened in set configuration by rotation of the tubing string, and which may be released from set configuration by longitudinal movement of the tubing string. Locking means maintain the packer set when the tubing string is raised slightly to open a bypass between the tubing string and the set packer. Continued raising of the tubing string releases the locking means to permit the packer to be retrieved. Dual opposed spreader cones keep the packer set against well pressure differentials acting from either above or below the packer. Pressure responsive means are also employed to increase the forces anchoring the tubing string against movement to open the bypass as differential well pressures tend to so move the tubing string.

    • Disclosed is a retrievable, weight set well packer which is set and released by longitudinal movement of the tubing string. Locking means are provided for keeping the packer set when the tubing is raised slightly to open a bypass between the tubing and set packer. Continued raising of the tubing releases the lock means to permit the packer to be retrieved. Dual opposed spreader cones keep the packer set against pressure induced forces in either direction. Differential sealing areas are also employed to prevent such forces from opening the bypass.

    • A well tool for use in a tubular well conduit comprising a tool body including at least one radially extendable element for engaging the well conduit, and first and second tool body portions. The tool body portions are operatively associated with the radially extendable element and relatively movable longitudinally toward each other to extend the radially extendable element. Such movement is effected by longitudinal movement of a mandrel assembly which is engageable with the second tool body portion whereby they together form an actuator. The tool further comprises lock means cooperative between the actuator and the first tool body portion to limit movement of the tool body portions away from each other thereby locking the radially extendable element in its extended position. Tightening means associated with the lock means tightens the lock means responsive to fluid pressure acting in a direction opposite the direction of movement of the actuator during setting. The same or similar pressure responsive means may also serve to resist movement of the first tool body portion during setting.

    • A check valve assembly for use in a flow conductor. A tubular valve body with a central flow passage is mounted in the assembly. A spring urges the body toward closed position in which a rigid sleeve encircles and covers outlet ports in the downstream end of the body. A resilient skirt of rubber extending from the end of the sleeve engages the outer surface of the body to form a seal which prevents reverse fluid flow through the valve. The rigid sleeve isolates the ports from high reverse pressure differentials. Forward flow, or a sufficiently great forward pressure differential, overcomes the spring bias and pushes the downstream end of the tubular body through the bottom of the sleeve and skirt to a position in which the outlet ports are uncovered for normal flowing operation. The spring returns the valve body to closed position when the flow reverses or the forward pressure differential falls below a prescribed value.

    • A setting tool for a liner hanger in an oil well completion system wherein the setting tool mechanism incorporates structure for manipulating a liner prior to and subsequent to hanging the liner hanger in a well casing. Prior to setting the liner hanger the setting tool is locked to a liner hanger by an interconnection with a clutch housing. After hanging the liner hanger, rotation of the setting tool mandrel uncouples the coupling nut from the liner hanger to release the setting tool from the liner hanger and further rotation of the setting tool moves a lock nut to a position when the coupling nut locks the clutch housing to the setting tool so that the liner hanger can be rotated after it is hung in a well casing. The liner hanger and the clutch housing have interengageable clutch surfaces.
