    • An assembly for installation within the end of a joint of casing or liner for use in a downhole environment where the liner or casing is disposed in the borehole which traverses earth formations. The assembly includes an annular split ring expander and an annular split ring slip element and a self-energizing packing element which has an interference fit with respect to the bore of a string of pipe. A mechanically operated setting tool has a set of nut members on a threaded mandrel which are selectively operated for setting the slip element of the assembly into a wedging engagement with the expander in the wall of a well pipe and for releasing the setting tool from the body of the assembly to leave the assembly installed within the end of a joint of casing or liner. An expander nut is threadedly coupled to the end of the body of the assembly to lock the slip member in position and the bore of the body is conformed to receive a valve and a landing collar arrangement.

    • A continuous flow well bore perforation washing tool is shown of the type having a tubular mandrel with sidewalls defining a flow passage, an upper end for connection in a pipe string and a lower end with means for blocking the flow of fluid from the pipe string through the mandrel. Upper and lower pressure responsive packer assemblies are carried on opposite ends of the mandrel. An outer setting sleeve surrounds the mandrel between the packer assemblies to define an annular chamber between the mandrel and setting sleeve. A continuous flow passage communicates the mandrel interior, the annular chamber, and the well bore. Selectively sized orifices in the setting sleeve form a restriction in a portion of the continuous flow passage. By selectively sizing the orifices, a back pressure buildup can be created in the annular chamber which is used to set the packer assemblies as fluid is continuously flowed through the continuous flow passage.

    • Disclosed is a rig for working on wells, and including a generally two-legged mast, with each leg constructed with a traveling pole telescoping about and along a gin pole. The mast may be so extended by means of a chain drive mounted on the traveling legs of the mast. Hydraulically-operated slips selectively lock each traveling leg to the respective gin pole to prevent the former from sliding down the latter. The mast may be lowered to, and raised from, a generally horizontal configuration for transport on a truck. A snubber, or other pipe gripping apparatus, may be suspended by the mast and folded under the mast as the mast is moved to a horizontal configuration. With the mast erect, a control console may be elevated by means of a winch line supported by the mast. The mast may be mounted on a skid carried by a truck, with the skid movable relative to the truck bed for the purpose of aligning the mast relative to a well.

    • Apparatus and method for cementing a liner in a well bore in which the apparatus may comprise: a setting tool having a tubular mandrel connected in a pipe string for extension through the liner; a liner wiper releasably disposed within the liner near one end of the mandrel; a plug member for effecting a movable seal behind cement as it is pumped through the pipe string into the liner; a seal assembly sealingly engaging the exterior of the mandrel and the interior of the liner above the liner wiper; and a latch assembly releasably connecting the seal assembly to the liner so as to permit limited axial movement of the mandrel without disturbing the axial position of the seal assembly. In the method of cementing a liner using the apparatus, the force due to pressure applied to the seal assembly, during pumping of cement, is transferred to the liner without transfer to the mandrel.

    • A well tool for use in a tubular well conduit comprising a tool body including at least one radially extendable element for engaging the well conduit, and first and second tool body portions. The tool body portions are operatively associated with the radially extendable element and relatively movable longitudinally toward each other to extend the radially extendable element. Such movement is effected by longitudinal movement of a mandrel assembly which is engageable with the second tool body portion whereby they together form an actuator. The tool further comprises lock means cooperative between the actuator and the first tool body portion to limit movement of the tool body portions away from each other thereby locking the radially extendable element in its extended position. Tightening means associated with the lock means tightens the lock means responsive to fluid pressure acting in a direction opposite the direction of movement of the actuator during setting. The same or similar pressure responsive means may also serve to resist movement of the first tool body portion during setting.

Fluid-filled annular bearing chambers in the swivel assembly support the load of the liner pipe string, and permit the rotation of the liner pipe string with respect to the liner hanger during the cementing process. The bearing chambers are interconnected to equalize the fluid pressure and distribute the load uniformly over the bearing chambers.

    • A check valve assembly for use in a flow conductor. A tubular valve body with a central flow passage is mounted in the assembly. A spring urges the body toward closed position in which a rigid sleeve encircles and covers outlet ports in the downstream end of the body. A resilient skirt of rubber extending from the end of the sleeve engages the outer surface of the body to form a seal which prevents reverse fluid flow through the valve. The rigid sleeve isolates the ports from high reverse pressure differentials. Forward flow, or a sufficiently great forward pressure differential, overcomes the spring bias and pushes the downstream end of the tubular body through the bottom of the sleeve and skirt to a position in which the outlet ports are uncovered for normal flowing operation. The spring returns the valve body to closed position when the flow reverses or the forward pressure differential falls below a prescribed value.

    • Disclosed is a retrievable, weight set well packer which may be tightened in set configuration by rotation of the tubing string, and which may be released from set configuration by longitudinal movement of the tubing string. Locking means maintain the packer set when the tubing string is raised slightly to open a bypass between the tubing string and the set packer. Continued raising of the tubing string releases the locking means to permit the packer to be retrieved. Dual opposed spreader cones keep the packer set against well pressure differentials acting from either above or below the packer. Pressure responsive means are also employed to increase the forces anchoring the tubing string against movement to open the bypass as differential well pressures tend to so move the tubing string.
