    • The present invention describes an improved process for the preparation, isolation, and purification of the anti-ulcer agent omeprazole whereby the sulfide precursor pyrmetazole is reacted subsurfacely with exactly one molar equivalent of meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid in a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon or aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, such as methylene chloride or toluene; residual organic solvent is removed from the aqueous layer by vacuum distillation; crude product is obtained by reactive crystallization with an alkyl formate or formic acid solution and seeding; and pure product is isolated by recrystallization in methanol-water containing aqueous NaOH by subsurface addition of aqueous acetic acid to pH 9.0, seeding, filtration, washing, and drying. Omeprazole and compositions of omeprazole containing no chromatographically detectable levels of residual non-alcoholic organic reaction solvent and diminished levels of alcoholic solvent are also described.

    • A method and apparatus for reducing the accumulation of paraffin within an oil well that includes forming an electric circuit contact between the oil well sucker rod and tubing and connecting a power source to the sucker rod and tubing. An electric current is applied to the sucker rod in order to generate heat thereat. Preferably a rolling circuit contact is offset from the sucker rod to form a moving contact between the sucker rod and tubing, and in a preferred form a section of the sucker rod and pump is made of a material having a greater electrical resistance to increase the heat generated in a region of high paraffin accumulation. In another embodiment circuit assemblies are provided in the production string to alter the region being heated as the sucker rod reciprocates.

    • A method of removing paraffin build up from an oil well which includes determining the location of a cooler portion of the oil well at which paraffin build up occurs, introducing an inductance heating element down into the annular space between the oil well tubing and the oil well casing, positioning the inductance heating element in the vicinity of the cooler portion and inductance heating the inside surface of the oil well tube to at least the temperature about that of the melting point of paraffin. Preferably, the inside surface of the tube is heated on the down stroke of the oil well sucker rod and at the start of the sucker rod up stroke in order to strip the paraffin from the tubing. The outside surface of the sucker rod is heated on its up stroke and the inductance heater has multiple bands of coil to heat the same general area of the sucker rod as it travels.

    • Saturated cyclic amines (e.g., piperazines and piperidines) are reductively alkylated with an N-containing heteroaryl carbaldehyde using an alkylcarboxylic acid and a borohydride to obtain a product comprising an N-((N-containing heteroaryl)methyl)-substituted cyclic amine and one or more borane complexes thereof, after which the product is treated with a catalytic amount of a Pt or Pd catalyst in the presence of an alcohol to cleave the borane complex(es) and thereby afford the N-((N-containing heteroaryl)methyl)cyclic amine free of borane complex. Saturated cyclic amines are also reductively alkylated by adding an N-containing heteroaryl carbaldehyde and the amine to a tetrahydroborate salt-alkylcarboxylic acid-solvent admixture and aging the resulting reaction mixture to obtain an alkylated product substantially free of borane complex.
