    • An infant environmental transition system and method provides an infant with a controlled, healthy transition from an intrauterine environment to the extrauterine environment, and includes a housing within which the infant is supported by a soft, form-fitting bolster system. The bolster system is comprised of one or more pads, or bolsters, arranged such that they can be placed about an infant. A gentle but firm pressure is exerted on the infant by the bolster or bolsters through the use of straps or by the use of a U-shaped spring covered partially or completely by a bolster or bolsters. This pressure offers a reduction of an infant's stress level, as well as physical stabilization of the infant. Environmental conditions provided within the housing include simulated motions, sounds and tactile sensations resembling the intrauterine environment. A suspension and drive system controls the degree of movement imparted to the housing and to an infant supported therein. The resulting motion closely approximates the motion experienced by the fetus while the mother is walking. The sound profile simulates intrauterine cardiovascular and gastrointestinal sounds. The system simulates day and night variations in motions and sounds, integrates changes to the environment over time toward the natural extrauterine environment, and may respond to infant activity or other inputs at various intervals.

    • A cartridge which contains two spools. The supply spool has wound about it a printing ribbon and the take-up spool being used for wrapping the used ribbon. The cartridge has a ribbon exit at one location and a ribbon entry at a remote location to define a path for the ribbon to pass therealong. Two drive gears are engaged with each other and a pressure roller. The drive gears are located and their lower portions are configured to engage the respective drive shafts of various printers. When the first drive gear is driven by a printer, the second gear, which includes the drive wheel, rotates in the opposite direction of the drive shaft of the printer. When the second gear is driven, the integral drive wheel rotates in the same direction as the drive shaft of the printer. The pressure roller is provided with internal flexible spokes, or springs, and provides a self-adjusting bias against the drive wheel to drive the ribbon and provides an extremely efficient pinching action. An end of ribbon detection system which includes a reflector or the like positioned between a sensor and the ribbon to allow optimization of the light path is also provided.

    • An infant environmental transition system provides an infant with controlled simulated movements encountered by an infant in an intrauterine environment. The system includes a suspension system having a plurality of flexures coupled between a base plate and a moving mattress platform. A cam shaft assembly includes a groove that engages a linear follower connected to the moving platform so that the follower moves along the groove while the cam shaft assembly rotates to move the linear follower, and thereby reciprocate the moving mattress platform in a longitudinal direction. Alternatively, a rotating crank assembly translates crank rotation to reciprocating movement of the mattress platform. The cam shaft assembly also includes an eccentric cam coupled to a rocker that is coupled to one of the flexures to angularly displace the moving mattress platform supported on the flexures, and thereby to provide the composite reciprocating and rotational movements of the moving mattress platform that simulate the intrauterine environment.

    • A mechanical device for automatically positioning a closure plate for sealing the opening created by the folding of adjacent segments of an articulated chute to thereby prevent undesired discharge or leakage from the chute is provided. The device, which is particularly useful on cement trucks, includes a closure plate rotatably connected to one segment of the chute and disposed to articulate upon an adjacent segment of the chute so that the closure plate seals the opening when the chute is in a folded configuration and, when the segments are unfolded to deliver a charge, rotates to a position clear of the discharge path. The device also includes means for sealably biasing the closure plate toward the opening when the segments are folded and for biasing the closure plate away from the discharge path when the segments are in an unfolded position.
