    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an activated carbon having a large electrostatic capacitance per volume and its manufacturing method, and to provide a polarizable electrode and an electric double layer capacitor.
      SOLUTION: The activated carbon is obtained by activation processing an easy graphite carbonaceous material by use of an alkali metal hydride. The graphite crystalline structure parameter Ib meets the formula 0.40 1 /Ib

      0 is the maximum value of an X-ray diffractin strength obtained in subtracting scattering strength of air from the diffraction strength of an X-ray diffraction strength curve (002) face of the activated carbon obtained by activation processing the easy graphite carbonaceous material, and an Ib
      1 is the maximum value of an X-ray diffraction strength of a part above the curve drawn by interpolating each point of 2θ(θis diffraction angle) =10°, 13°, 37°, and 60° by three dimensional spline on the X-ray diffraction strength curve obtained in subtracting the scattering strength of air from a diffraction strength of the X-ray diffraction strength curve (002) face of the activated carbon obtained by activation processing the easy graphite carbonaceous material.
