    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve stability in combustion by forming air-fuel mixture in the vicinity of an ignition plug stably and suppress reduction of tumble stream to the minimum extent.
      SOLUTION: A bottom face 22a of a substantially rectangular recessed part 22 on a crown face of a piston 4 forms a curved face being substantially parallel with a central axial line of a piston pin along tumble stream. A protruding bar part 25 being parallel with the central axial line of the piston pin is formed in a substantially central part of the bottom face 22a just below the ignition plug 7, and rising parts 25a, 25b on its intake valve side and exhaust valve side form circular arc faces. Radius of curvature of the rising part 25b on the exhaust valve side is larger than that on the intake valve side. An ascending current going upward occurs when a spray passes above the protruding bar part 25 at stratified lean combustion time, and a part of the spray is guided onto an upper ignition plug side, thereby achieving stable combustion. Since the rising part 25b on the exhaust valve side forms the circular arc face having large radius of curvature, flow of tumble stream at homogeneous combustion time is not obstructed.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve combustion stability by forming an air-fuel mixture in the vicinity of an ignition plug stably and to minimize reduction of tumbling flow.
      SOLUTION: A bottom face 25 of a substantially rectangular recessed part 22 on a crown face of a piston 4 forms a curved face being substantially parallel with a central axis of a piston pin along the tumbling flow. A step part 27 being parallel with the central axis of the piston pin is formed in a substantially central part of the bottom face 25 just below the ignition plug, and a rising part 27a is formed on an intake valve side. A rising stream going upward occurs when a spray passes above the step part 27 at stratified lean combustion time, and a part of the spray is guided onto an upper ignition plug side, thereby achieving stable combustion. Since cut-out parts 28, 28 are provided at both ends of the step part 27 and the bottom face 25 is continuous without a step, flow of the tumbling flow at homogeneous combustion time is not obstructed.

The plurality of the nozzle holes include nozzle holes A1, A2 for forming spray in the periphery of the electrode of the ignition plug, and nozzle holes A3, A4 for forming spray beneath the periphery of the electrode of the ignition plug. The nozzle holes A1, A2 for forming spray in the periphery of the electrode of the ignition plug form the spray elongated in cross section which is orthogonal to a spray axis.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce HC owing to premature activation and after burning of a catalyst by a large delay of ignition timing and to avoid thermal damage of a catalytic converter owing to excessively high temperature. SOLUTION: In cold start of an internal combustion engine wherein an early temperature rise of the catalytic converter is required, the ignition timing is set to be after compression top dead center and super-retard combustion is performed by injecting fuel immediately before the ignition timing and after the compression top dead center. Turbulence in a cylinder is improved by the high pressure fuel injection immediately before the ignition timing, flame spread is promoted and therefore stable combustion is obtained. Although very high exhaust temperature is obtained in the super-retard combustion, the exhaust temperature gets excessively high when load is increased in vehicle starting, turning-on of an auxiliary or the like and there is fear for the thermal damage of the catalytic converter.
