When a liquid crystal compsn. having a wider liquid crystal temperature range is required or a high-speed response at a low temperature is required, a 4-n-alkoxy-2,3-dicyanophenyl 4'-(4"-n-alkylcyclohexyl)phenylcarboxylate (C) of formula III (wherein n, m are each 1W6) is used together with the above compsn. contg. components A and B.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid-crystal optical modulating element which has superior responsibility and good contrast by using ferroelectric liquid crystal, and forming a temperature area which is in cholesteric phase or nematic phase. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 3 are formed on two glass substrates 2, and thin films of a high polymer such as polyimide are rubbed over their surface with fiber such as gauze and cloth to form a orientation control film 4 for orienting liquid crystal 1 in the rubbing direction. The liquid crystal 1 is charged between the substrates 2 hermetically. The transparent electrodes 3 are connected to a power source 7. Further, polarizing plates 8 are stuck outside of the glass substrates 2. Incident light I0 from a light source 9 is transmitted through the liquid-crystal element to obtain transmitted light I , which is seen by an observer. The liquid crystal 1 has ferrodielectric property and also has the temperature ara which is in cholesteric or nematic phase. When the temperature area is held at such temperatures as to enter the cholesteric or nematic phase, the rubbing method and a slanting vapor-depositing method are effective to orientation control over liquid-crystal molecules. Once an uniform array is obtained, the uniform array is maintained as it is when the temperature is varied slowly to the temperature area showing the ferrodielectric property.

      PROCESS: A solution of a compound expressed by formula III in ethanol is prepared, and a small amount of Na [BH
      4 ] is added to the resultant solution under cooling with ice and stirring. Acetic acid is then added thereto to produce a compound expressed by formula IV, which is then reacted with SOCl
      2 to give a compound expressed by formula V. Sodium is dissolved in propyl alcohol, and a solution of the compound expressed by formula V in dimethylformamide is added to the resultant solution and reacted under heating to obtain the compound expressed by formula I , e.g. the compound expressed by formula II.
