    • A magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus is provided which includes a head structure compatible with a long-time play mode in handling either of two kinds of signals containing different amounts of information, such as a current digital picture signal and a high-definition (HD) digital picture signal in the rate of two to one at a constant number of revolutions of the drum by restricting an increase of the number of heads. In an aspect of the apparatus, four heads (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b) are arranged on the rotating drum equally 90° spaced, a fifth head (1c) of an opposite azimuth is mounted close to any of those heads, the number of drum revolutions is increased to twice larger than the normal number, the current digital picture signal is recorded and reproduced for each channel by using two heads, that is, the fifth head (1c) and a head positioned 180° opposite to the fifth head. On the other hand, the HD digital picture signal, containing twice as much information as the current digital picture signal, is recorded and reproduced for two channels by four heads (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b) equally 90° spaced, exclusive of the fifth head (1c). According to another aspect, eight heads (5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b) are arranged on the rotating drum equally 45° spaced, ninth and tenth heads (9a, 9b) of an opposite azimuth are mounted respectively close to any two heads (7a, 7b) 180° opposite to each other, and the normal number of drum revolutions is used. Under this condition, the current digital picture signal is recorded and reproduced for two channels by four heads (5a, 5b, 9a, 9b), equally 90° spaced, including the ninth and the tenth heads (9a, 9b), and the HD digital picture signal is recorded and reproduced for four channels by eight heads (5A, 5B, 6A, 6B, 7A, 7B, 8A, 8B), equally 45° spaced, exclusive of the ninth and the tenth heads (9a, 9b).

    • A magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus includes an input circuit (2, 9) for inputting the digital signal, an identification information addition circuit (16, 27) for adding recording identification information indicative of recording identification for the digital signal input through the input circuit, a recording circuit (17) for recoding the digital signal with the recording identification information on the recoding medium, a reproducing circuit (20, 21) for reproducing the content of the recording medium, an identification information detecting portion (22) for detecting the identification information from a reproduced signal (91) reproduced by the reproducing circuit for ouputting an identification information detection signal (114) indicative of detection of the identification information, a storage circuit (23) for storing the reproduced signal, a time stamp detection circuit (82) for detecting the time stamp from the reproduced signal stored in the storage circuit, an output control circuit (26) for generating a timing for reading the reproduced signal from the storage circuit on the basis of the time stamp detected by the time stamp detection circuit, a reset circuit (27) for resetting the output control circuit in response to at least the identification information detection signal, and an output circuit (21) for outputting the reproduced signal read from the storage circuit, the identification information addition circuit adding the recording identification information to the digital signal for a given period where the recording circuit initiating recording on the recording medium, and the reset circuit resetting the at least the control circuit upon detection of the recording identification information from the identification information detecting circuit.
