    • A surface light source device of side light type illuminating an LCD panel and comprising a guide plate, a primary light source, a reflection sheet, and a prism sheet for light control. A plurality of fine light scattering elements and rough area M are formed on an emission face of the guide plate. The rough area M is formed among the light scattering elements and has scattering power weaker than that of the light scattering elements. The dot-like light scattering elements are distributed according to a certain pattern that is designed to promote emission. Emission is promoted where the light scattering elements are formed and also in the area M. Accordingly, fine periodic bright-dark unevenness and glaring are reduced and the prism sheet, disposed on the emission face, is prevented from sticking to the emission face.

    • A guide plate has a major face on which projections are arranged, wherein the projections have an arch-like profile within the vicinity of an incidence end face, or, in addition to this, within regions along both side end faces, thereby preventing the guide plate from producing abnormal brightness which could be caused by reflective appearance of edges. A primary light source is disposed beside the guide plate. Major faces of the guide plate provide an emission face and a back face. A prism sheet and a protection sheet are disposed along the emission face. A liquid crystal display panel is additionally arranged to provide a liquid crystal display. The guide plate has a wedge-shaped cross section and a minor face at its thicker end provides the incidence end face along the primary light source. The emission face may be provided with light scattering pattern to promote emission. The projections may have a profile variation such as changing gradually from being arc-like to being triangular via transitive according to distance from the incidence end face and from side edges.

    • A guide plate having an emission face for light-output, a back face and an incidence end face for light-input is improved. The emission face is provided with a plurality of projections each of which includes a blunt top portion. The projections have shapes such as like domes or like ridges. Each dome-like projection has a diameter ranging, for example, from 50 &mgr;m to 200 &mgr;m and has a height ranging, for example, from 0.1 &mgr;m to 50 &mgr;m. The dome-like projections distribute with density such that one or more projections are allocated, for example, per box of 0.5 mm×0.5 mm. Ridge-like projections run so as to have a crossing angle, for example, 60 degrees or more with respect to the incidence end face. Ratio of repetition pitch of the ridge-like projections to their height falls within a range, for example, from 5000:1 to 1:1. Height of each ridge-like projection may fall within a range from 1 &mgr;m to 100 &mgr;m. The emission face may be further provided with light scattering pattern consisting of a plurality of scattering elements to scatter illumination light. The improved guide plate is employed in a surface light source device of side light type. The surface light source device may be applied to a LCD having a LCD panel, which is illuminated by the light source device.

A half-integer of a wavelength of λc is set as a normalized phase difference, for the optical path length difference imparting unit, between two polarization states, and means for generating a difference in refractive index dispersion is provided between the optical waveguides of the optical path length difference imparting unit, so that the change rate of the transmittance with respect to wavelength is suppressed for the two polarization states.
