    • A protection system is described herein that dynamically determines whether a computer system can access a particular resource based on a combination of a dynamic health state of the computer system and a dynamic reputation of the resource. When a user attempts to access a resource, the protection system intercepts the request. The protection system determines the reputation of the resource that the user is attempting to access and the health of the computer system through which the user is attempting to access the resource. Based on the determined resource reputation and the determined computer system health, the protection system determines whether to allow the requested access to the resource.

    • State-based offspring objects are created to correspond to each object in a file system when the corresponding object is opened. Each offspring object contains two fields, an original name field containing the name of the object as opened and a final name field. Each name change made to the object is written to the final name field so that the final name field always reflects the last change made to the name of the object. The various combinations of the fields define the offspring object's state. The offspring objects are arranged in a hierarchical structure that mimics the structure of the file system with the offspring object corresponding to the top level open object as its root. When the changes are committed, the state of the offspring object determines the operation to be performed on the corresponding object. Once the commit is completed, the original name field is overwritten with the final name. If changes are aborted, the original name is written to the final name field to revert the changes. A temporary offspring object is created when necessary to provide for circular renaming situations.

    • A method for forming a semiconductor structure on an active area mesa with minimal loss of field oxide deposited in isolation trenches adjacent the mesa. The trench insulating material is protected by an etch barrier layer having at least a partial resistance to etchants used in further device processing steps. The barrier layer may also be deposited over the surface of the substrate to protect it from damage during device processing. The barrier layer may be removed by an etchant having a selectivity for the barrier layer over that of the surrounding device elements. Final processing of the device may be completed once the barrier layer is removed.

    • A memory for storing data for access by an application program being executed in a processing system of a distributed computing environment includes an object-oriented data structure. The data structure include a plurality of base data objects having predetermined instances including a directory object and an entry object, and a plurality of attribute data objects storing information about particular resources. The plurality of base and attribute data objects are configurable into a namespace, e.g., a tree structure, that enables the application program to locate resources in the distributed computing environment. The predetermined instances of the base data objects may also include a link object that points to another object in the tree structure, thereby transforming the namespace into a directed graph.
