    • A yarn false twist crimping machine which comprises a processing frame which mounts the yarn processing components, a creel for mounting the yarn packages, and a take-up frame which is laterally spaced from the processing frame on the side thereof opposite the creel so as to define an operator aisle therebetween. An elongate heater is mounted to the take-up frame and an elongate cooling plate is mounted to the processing frame, and a false twist unit is mounted to the processing frame below the outlet end of the cooling plate. The yarn is guided from the creel in a generally planar arrangement across the operator aisle and to a first yarn feed system which is mounted on the take-up frame. The yarn then advances through the heater and cooling plate to the false twist unit and so as to loop back through the plane defined by the yarns being fed from the creel. Two such machines may be mounted in a mirror image relationship so as to define a service aisle which is bordered by the take-up frames of the two machines, thereby providing for the efficient servicing of the take-up devices of the two machines.

    • An apparatus for false twisting a yarn is provided which comprises, in one embodiment, a thin pliable disc mounted for rotation with a cooperating disc or roller to define a twisting zone between opposing friction surfaces thereof. A pressure applying member is mounted adjacent the back face of the pliable disc for biasing the disc toward the other member locally at the twisting zone so as to firmly engage the yarn passing through the twisting zone and while the friction surfaces remain in substantially non-contacting relationship with respect to each other. The pressure applying member utilizes an air cushion between the member and back face of the disc to minimize friction. Where two discs are employed, they may be mounted for rotation in a common direction, and such that the yarn may be guided through the twisting zone without passing between the axes of rotation of the discs.

    • A yarn false twisting apparatus is disclosed which includes a pair of twist imparting discs, with the discs being mounted for rotation so that portions of the disc surfaces are disposed in opposing, substantially non-contacting relationship and define a twisting zone therebetween. The discs rotate in a common rotational direction, and a yarn is continuously advanced through the twisting zone in a direction parallel to a line extending perpendicularly between the axes of rotation of the two discs. In one embodiment, one of the discs is relatively thin and flexible, and there is further provided a pressure applying member which acts to locally bias the flexible disc toward the other disc at the twisting zone. Preferably, the two discs are mounted for movement toward and away from each other in a direction parallel to a line extending perpendicularly between the axes of rotation, and the pressure applying member is mounted for movement in a direction perpendicular to the direction of relative movement between the two discs, to thereby permit the ratio of twist insertion to yarn speed to be adjusted.

    • A yarn false twisting apparatus is disclosed which comprises a pair of circular discs which are mounted for rotation about spaced apart axes, and such that portions of the surfaces are disposed in opposing face to face relation and define a twisting zone therebetween. In the operative position, one disc is resiliently deflected from its normal plane of rotation at the twisting zone by its engagement with the friction surface of the other disc, or a yarn passing therebetween, to thereby effectively engage and impart twist to the yarn. The bearing housings for the supporting shafts of the discs are held against movement with respect to each other during the twisting operation, and means are provided for automatically separating the housings and thus the discs in the event of a yarn breakage, to thereby avoid wear of the opposing disc surfaces.

    • An apparatus for false twisting a yarn is provided which comprises, in one embodiment, a pair of endless belts mounted for rotation to define a twisting zone between opposing friction surfaces thereof. A pressure applying member is mounted adjacent the back side of each belt for biasing the belts toward each other locally at the twisting zone so as to firmly engage the yarn passing through the twisting zone and while the friction surfaces remain in substantially non-contacting relationship with respect to each other. The pressure applying member preferably utilizes an air cushion between the member and back side of the belt to minimize friction. In another embodiment, the apparatus comprises an endless belt in association with a disc mounted for rotation about an axis disposed perpendicular to the runs of the belt, and in a further embodiment, the endless belt is associated with a roller mounted adjacent the runs of the belt.

    • A process for the production of a core/mantle yarn, in which a core thread is continuously conducted through a spinning zone in a gap formed between two adjacent and oppositely moving surfaces; staple fibers are fed into the path of the core thread and come into frictional contact with the moving surfaces in said zone to spin the staple fibers about the core thread; the core thread is preferably stretched during the spinning in order to bring about a defined, predetermined elastic stretch of the core thread in the spinning zone; and the core thread has a roughened surface which may be obtained by using a staple fiber yarn or thread obtained by texturizing, weaving, twisting, etc. The invention is especially characterized by an improved adherence of the fibers of the mantle to the core thread by pre-coating the core thread with an adhesive, or preferably by preapplying colloidal silicic acid to the core thread.
